At one point he says he doesn’t know why Phillips attempts to get the ball as he isn’t winning it. When you look at both incidents back, Fatawu doesn’t win the ball as it ends up with Hutchinson still in our possession and then the ball is booted out for a throw in in the Phillips incident. So what he says isn’t even correct. Just reassures we were completely done over on this one. [Post edited 4 Nov 2024 21:43]

Perhaps one of the reasons is the NFL the coach has to request the review (and has a limited number of times to request per game).
I can't see how that wouldn't improve things TBH. There's so much obfuscation and mystery around when and why VAR gets triggered. If we HAVE to have VAR. |  | | |

Having watched the game back, the only reason I could see for the ref justifying the red card, is due to the number of challenges/fouls Phillips had made in the minutes before that incident.
It is normal enough for refs to do a count & say 'next time you're getting booked'; but there didn't appear to be any such warning given, it hasn't been suggested as the reason anyway, and it would be a very big call to make where it would result in a sending off.
The way the player went down made it look as though Phillips had gone through him; VAR could have advised the ref to have a look at the pitchside screen to make sure of course. | | | |

I watched the whole Gallagher thing again.
Him helping his union has made this whole situation a lot worse in terms of corrupt officiating. Warnock pressed him well and he offered no answers to support what he was saying whilst defending this corrupt mob. Especially when he said he didn’t think it was a penalty.

Every time I see 'Ref Watch' I wonder just what the point of the whole thing is. Gallagher just continually defends the referee, constantly trying to justify the indefensible.
I understand trying to build respect for officials, especially in game when the adrenaline is running, but post match, clubs should be able to make a proper review of refereeing and VAR performance, without censoring themselves because of the risk of being put on a charge.
The ridiculous situation where despite the volume of video evidence being available where yellow cards, particularly second yellows cannot be rescinded also needs to be fixed. |  |

They often don't. However, I think there is more subjectivity in football which is the issue. Get rid of that and we have a better product.

I think that's it. It's the rules that are troublesome, not *necessarily* the refs. In the NFL, the rules are pretty solid. Don't grab the facemask. Don't interfere with the receiver etc. There's no 'don't grab the facemask unless it's a natural thing to be doing at that time.'
All they do is look at the video and say, 'yeah, he's grabbing the facemask,' or 'yeah his foot was over the line.'
Our rules have so many weird exceptions that even with all the video evidence, it's STILL subjective, so there's always a get out if the ref or VAR official wants it. | | | |

The defender gets there first and clears. I suppose the ref would argue Phillips was endangering the opponent by catching his leg as he clears. A bit unfortunate on Phillips as he didn’t really snap into it. Although he gave the ref the choice. Had his touch been better none of it would have happened. |  |
