they weren't great, but there's a difference between not covering yourself in glory and burning the whole thing down

It's all a ratchet.

Populist politician, sponsored by self-interested billionaires, successfully persuades enough people not to worry about it, just get gas and oil prices down whatever the consequences, that reduces the political space for rational, science-believing people to make the case for what's actually necessary.

I feel sad more than anything.

Sad for the many undocumented migrants in America who will possibly be facing deportations,.for wanting to help themselves and their families...

Sad for the many Ukrainians who will be petrified at the prospect of America withdrawing support and thus leaving them at Putin's mercy.

Sad for the many victims of sexual predators who will be aghast that America has again elected a nonce for its leader.

Sad for those at the bottom of the pile in America who have bought into the idea that a narcissist like trump gives a toss about their prospects rather than his own.

Sad for those on here who gleefully gloat, much as they did after Brexit...ironically showing their colours for all to see. (We see you)

And sad for the future generations globally who will face the impact of climate change knowing that for 4 years the US will be led by someone indifferent to the impact climate change will have on the world's poorest.

But as I said yesterday, there's fck all I can do to change it, so will concentrate on trying to be a decent person, trying to help people where I can and trying not to overly dwell on the way millions of people are so easily duped by the likes of Trump (and Johnson before him)

Because it is going to embolden Putin, and could spell the end of NATO.

I'm also devastated on behalf of my American friends, especially the women.

The majority of American men took an action to choose a legally confirmed sexual predator as the leader of their country, and to effectively give him immunity from prosecution for his sexual assaults. So I'm disgusted, too.

But back to terrified: anyone who watched any of his rambling speeches with any degree of distance will be aware that he is an off-the-scale narcissist who has entered cognitive decline. And he has been emboldened after the Republicans in Congress failed to hold him to account for his actions after he lost the last Election. And he has been elected for a second and final time, so he has no further accountability to the electorate.

An emboldened, unaccountable, narcissistic, sexual predator in cognitive decline in charge of the nuclear codes is a terrifying prospect.

Of course. But Alok Sharma needed them to move the perception of what was possible and necessary, to show leadership to all developed nations.

That would also have moved the Overton Window within the States in terms of how willing the public there was willing to be gaslighted by gas companies anymore.

Astounding that a state like Florida, with so many communities, including major cities, fractionally above sea level, and battered by a once-in-a-century hurricane only weeks ago, can lol along to Trump's "oil is the future" schtick.

Edit: "his" in last sentence to "Trump's"

Plus this time around he elects a cabinet of fellow lunatics and has the Senate.

I desperately hope the Democrats can take the House, but that looks dubious too, I think? And how much or a brake on a Trumpian four year era would a Democratic House be?
