For the Guardian

Charlie Compton
Club Ipswich
Position Midfielder
Born 5 September 2007
Ipswich hope Compton will be one of the next stars to emerge from their famed academy. The early signs are certainly encouraging: he has started every game for their under-18s so far this season, showing his versatility by operating in both the No 8 and No 10 roles. His box-to-box qualities catch the eye immediately but there are other major strings to the 17-year-old’s bow. A winning blend of composure and technical ability means he poses a genuine threat in the opposition penalty area, whether scoring or creating, while his passing range means he is capable of controlling matches from deep. A challenge for under-21 football can be anticipated as the season progresses. Nick Ames

Nick Ames is well-known to many on here, and knows more about Town than any other journalist apart from Phil Ham.

If only Old Git still sent his emails we would know a lot more about Charlie Compton, including vivid descriptions of his Mum's coat, analysis of his gait and speculation as to his diet.

There was a link to this article recently in the Guardian which I clicked on.

Anyone know how Charlie Compton has progressed now that he is roughly a year older?

Scholar of the Year last season, broke into the U21s but I think had an injury at the end of the season. Was back in the U18s at the end of August but not been involved since then.

Know him and his family well, cracking player and a superb person in general off the pitch.

Picked up an injury at the end of last season and still working his way back. Assuming hits the heights of where he was previously, could be a real gem. The fact we plucked him from Norwich academy is an added little bonus!

Edit - plays centre mid. Norwich used him as a holding midfielder but very comfortable getting forward. Passing and breaking the lines main strength but with a hell of a finish in him. Without putting any kind of pressure or expectation, absolutely in the mould of Gerrard.

Saw him a couple of years ago at pre season game at Haverhill Rovers. Happened to be standing next to his mum and I told her then her boy was the best player on the pitch. Confident and smooth.
