Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday 01:21 - Dec 6 with 5341 views | The_Romford_Blue | Anyone been? Things to do? Places to visit? A decent boozer is all we realistically need to keep me and her happy but would be nice if one of the days was spent doing something else abit different. We plan to go to the Christmas market and will almost certainly have a walk through the red light district (for the lolz) at some point but what else can we do? Only Monday (8am arrival) to Wednesday (9pm) so not too long. Still cost me £880 though which feels abit much! Nice hotel though. Recommendations please folks

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 15:21 - Dec 6 by Lord_Lucan | I spent Christmas day over there once and it was pretty quiet, which was actually quite nice. Had Christmas lunch in The American hotel. I though I went ice skating after lunch but when I mentioned it on a family outing only last week I was pelted. Apparently I didn't do any skating, i just drank lots of their warm wine. They actually celebrate Christmas a week or two before Dec 25th and a lot of the daft racists black up because of some weird tradition. I'm sure they have a huge Christmas market but I didn't see it. |
Probably a good thing you didn't do any skating while on the warm wine. I'd imagine it would lead to a good Lucan anecdote, but maybe one or two less fingers.

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 14:37 - Dec 6 by The_Flashing_Smile | I can't remember the name of it but I went to an amazing restaurant where we had 26 courses! They were very small, obvs, but we were struggling by the end. Also got on a tram that took us a bit out of town to a windmill that served its own real ale, which was good. Maybe our resident Dutch town fan knows what I'm talking about with the above, otherwise neither very helpful! I'd also recommend the Van Gogh museum if you're into art... and we did an early morning boat tour that included champagne breakfast. If you want to get some romance brownie points! We missed out on the Anne Frank museum as it was fully booked. Can't say that massively appealed to me anyway, but I might have felt different actually there. |
Brewery at the windmill was probably Brouwerij 't IJ https://www.brouwerijhetij.nl/windmill-tap-room/?lang=en

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 15:20 - Dec 6 by _clive_baker_ | You certainly can pay with your card, but be aware of any bank charges etc when using it abroad. If you're going for a few days they probably wont be that material unless you're going properly wild, but worth checking. E.g. I think HSBC is about 3%, so anything you pay for on your card will be converted to GBP at the spot rate and a 3% charge applied by way of a transaction fee. I travel abroad a lot for work so I have a Monzo. You might prefer to change up cash but you'll probably pay something on the conversion rate anyway. Yes its EURO. |
Be aware that many places do not take cash. Even the Christmas markets will expect and prefer card payments... although will probably accept cash too. To avoid charges or poor conversion rates, get a prepayment card and preload it. Visa and Mastercard both do them and are good for managing your budget too, especially if you are intending to drink/smoke a lot...

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 09:03 - Dec 6 by NederlandseBlue | There's a story about the theatre production of Anne Frank's life that it was so boring that part way through the show an audience member stood up and shouted "She's in the attic" before storming out. May be an urban legend. |
Reminds of the story (probably another urban myth) of the child upset at not getting a major part in the school class nativity play, instead relegated to being one of the Innkeepers: Jospeh: - Is there any space at your Inn, we have been traveling for days, my wife is heavily pregnant and we desperately seek somewhere to stay. Innkeeper: Sure, someone just cancelled so come on in.

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 04:57 - Dec 14 with 426 views | The_Romford_Blue | Thanks to all who gave info. Was a great trip. The highlight bizarrely was ordering a mixed grill from a steakhouse and it having a fantastic bit of beef on it that was in fact Venison. The rainbow cakes and brownies may have contributed to me not realising it was deer beforehand or that it was so incredibly tasty.

Glad you had a nice time Rommy. Venison is the meat of Kings.
