Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday 01:21 - Dec 6 with 5498 views | The_Romford_Blue | Anyone been? Things to do? Places to visit? A decent boozer is all we realistically need to keep me and her happy but would be nice if one of the days was spent doing something else abit different. We plan to go to the Christmas market and will almost certainly have a walk through the red light district (for the lolz) at some point but what else can we do? Only Monday (8am arrival) to Wednesday (9pm) so not too long. Still cost me £880 though which feels abit much! Nice hotel though. Recommendations please folks

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 10:58 - Dec 6 by leitrimblue | Was the way to go in the 90,s. Ferry over on a Friday evening, slaughtered all day Saturday and then hope someone had arranged, or at least had a plan for accommodation that evening. Though the idea of spending a night in a feck1n hostel now horrifies me. I don't even like hotels that much any more, to many people to close together |
I did the ferry, and on the return had to spend the night at Rotterdam station which was an experience I wouldn't want to repeat.

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 08:54 - Dec 6 by NederlandseBlue | For some alternative drinking experiences in the center try: Proeflokaal Arendsnest - a lovely old fashioned bar serving over 50 Dutch beers. It's also close to the De Negen Straatjes, which is full of interesting shops for last minute Christmas shopping. Wynand Fockink - a tiny bar serving their own liqueurs that they've been making since 1679. Even if you don't typically drink spirits, there will surely be 1 of their huge range that you will enjoy. Remember to take your first sip with both hands behind your back. Bar TwentySeven - If you want to splash out on nice cocktails, try this fancy cocktail lounge. Despite being on Dam Square, it's rather hidden so not frequented by as many tourists. Still gets busy with ITK locals so avoid peak times. The Christmas markets are deliberately kept in the most touristy parts of the city. But if you go to the one on Rembrandtplein, there's a nice darts bar called Oche which does good beer and bar snacks if you get cold. Tourists tend to stay on the square and so miss out on plenty of much nicer bars and good restaurants nearby, which you can find by walking down Utrechtsestraat. And don't just stay in the center. Take the free ferries from Amsterdam Centraal to explore the Noord district. The short Bulksloterweg route takes you across to the Eye Filmmuseum, A'DAM Lookout with the best views of the city, and the great burger bar/club The Butcher. The longer free ferry ride on the NDSM route takes you to the old docks which have been transformed into great bars like Pllek or IJver and restaurants like Cannibale Royale. There is a lot of interesting street art and, depending on when you go, there may be Europe's largest flea market happening called IJ-Hallen. The Amsterdam Light Festival should be on too. This is a series of installations by artists from all over the world which light up at night over the canals. There are boat tours but it's just as good to walk (part of) the route for free. Others have mentioned the canal boat tours. I would wrap up extra warm but choose the open top boats. You get to see much better. Some, although not sure if this is only in the summer, do unlimited drinks. |
I was there for a conference two weeks ago and the free ferry from the station took us to this place which had been recommended by Dutch colleagues. Really vibey and great food: https://tolhuistuin.nl/eten-drinken

Yeah we used to go from Hull to Zebrugge. There was no EasyJet or Ryanair back then so cheap flights weren't a thing [Post edited 6 Dec 2024 13:53]

Hill Street Blues was always my favourite caf. We had many a good schmoke in there lol. I remember walking up to Dam Square after we'd had a session in a caf and we saw this fat Spiderman living statue guy in the square. I've never found something so hilarious in my life, was literally rolling on the floor laughing at this Spiderman guy with a big beer belly.

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 14:37 - Dec 6 with 769 views | The_Flashing_Smile | I can't remember the name of it but I went to an amazing restaurant where we had 26 courses! They were very small, obvs, but we were struggling by the end. Also got on a tram that took us a bit out of town to a windmill that served its own real ale, which was good. Maybe our resident Dutch town fan knows what I'm talking about with the above, otherwise neither very helpful! I'd also recommend the Van Gogh museum if you're into art... and we did an early morning boat tour that included champagne breakfast. If you want to get some romance brownie points! We missed out on the Anne Frank museum as it was fully booked. Can't say that massively appealed to me anyway, but I might have felt different actually there.

The Red Light Bar in the Red Light district is still there - I just checked Google maps. It's a sports bar. Footy on the TV, Pool tables, pinball. You can smoke weed and they sell it from a room at the back. They sell alcohol too. You can't smoke tobacco inside. It is never very busy and is open noon through midnight.

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 10:43 - Dec 6 by giant_stow | You lived there?! Jammy sod. I went recentlybut couldn't get in to Anne Frank's house - gets booked up way ahead, so if you want to do it, book online now. We did the ajax stadium tour, which was nice. We also hired bikes and did a boat tour - consider an evening cruise. Also, if you're a puffer, they have 'smoking boats' (I couldn't do this as I was there with my little one). Also, as someone says above, exploor the outer bits. We loved Java Island - not loads there, just nice. Or NDSM which is a ferry ride away fro some culture and sh1t. Have fun. |
Yeah, only for a year but I had the opportunity to go with work, they sorted me and a colleague a place to live and I worked from the office over there. We're going back 10 years now though so no doubt a lot has changed. I have visited since, but even that was pre pandemic. I was young, free and single at the time and it was just about when Tinder was getting popular so fair to say it was good fun. A lot of drinking, partying and shagging. NYE in Amsterdam was absolutely wild with people just letting off fireworks all over the place.

Just booked three days in Amsterdam for Monday on 10:44 - Dec 6 by The_Romford_Blue | I’m led to believe Amsterdam & Berlin are the two most famous Christmas markets in the world. No idea myself as can’t say I’ve ever been to one but should be decent enough. Currency wise.. is it worth just keeping to my card or should I get some of their money out in cash (is it euros I’m guessing?) I love a pancake so I’ll definitely get one of those. Of the suggestions so far in the thread, I think the Van Gogh museum is the unlikeliest. Neither of us are really into art to be honest. Only way it would be a maybe is if we do an edible beforehand just for the experience of art in that state. [Post edited 6 Dec 2024 10:46]

You certainly can pay with your card, but be aware of any bank charges etc when using it abroad. If you're going for a few days they probably wont be that material unless you're going properly wild, but worth checking. E.g. I think HSBC is about 3%, so anything you pay for on your card will be converted to GBP at the spot rate and a 3% charge applied by way of a transaction fee. I travel abroad a lot for work so I have a Monzo. You might prefer to change up cash but you'll probably pay something on the conversion rate anyway. Yes its EURO.

I spent Christmas day over there once and it was pretty quiet, which was actually quite nice. Had Christmas lunch in The American hotel. I though I went ice skating after lunch but when I mentioned it on a family outing only last week I was pelted. Apparently I didn't do any skating, i just drank lots of their warm wine. They actually celebrate Christmas a week or two before Dec 25th and a lot of the daft racists black up because of some weird tradition. I'm sure they have a huge Christmas market but I didn't see it.

On reflection I think I probably did go to the Christmas market but can't remember much of it specifically. Those European Christmas markets are all quite similar, but definitely worth checking out when you're over there I would say, especially if you're with your Mrs as they tend to love all that. You'll be buying her some Churros and a mulled wine and whispering sweet nothings next to the fire.
