Archbishop Welby - what a disgrace 12:27 - Dec 7 with 1963 viewsfactual_blue

Archbishop Simon of Sudbury was beheaded by revolting peasants in 1381, not 1371 as he said in his tone-deaf speech.

He deserves to go for that mistake alone.

Took eight sword blows to get his head off. And a few fingers too. Bet that smarted - we all know how much it hurts when you get a paper cut on fingers!

You can still go and chat to his head in St Gregory’s Church.

Ah, the Peasants Revolt, Wat Tyler, Black Death, 100 years war. Those were the days.

This is the mistake that Welby should have apologised for.

Unforgivable.

It must be quite poignant for you on a visit to St Gregory's church, seeing the dead head that you once had conversations with...

No excuse for an inaccuracy like that. The Pope needs to get a stronger grip on his priests.

Despite living just near St Gregory's in Sudbury for much of my youth, I never once had the urge to ask for the cupboard to be opened so I view the severed and mummified head..... just weird and grim

The way the Catholic church is portrayed at the moment you may want to edit the second sentence.

It's not that bad, the Water Meadows are quite nice in summer.

From the crypt of the Church of St Giles,
Came a scream which resounded for miles,
"My goodness gracious!",
Cried Brother Ignatius,
"I forgot that Your Eminence had piles."

Not really. I had no qualms about severing his head. He was the King's evil councillor and needed to be removed.

I no longer live in Suffolk..... so the opportunity is lost.

But a mummified head, whether talking or not, is a bit too much for me to cope with

You’d have struggled to have lifted a sword, given your advanced years back then.

Of course Thomas Becket was bumped off with swords. But to quote Blackadder you’d have needed a toast rack to display what was left. Bit of a scrape up job by all accounts but it didn’t really matter as Henry 8th’s lads smashed Beckets tomb and contents to bits in the Reformation.

Tbf good King Henry was merciful to his second misses. A French mush was employed to lop her bonce off with a sword and did a good clean job of it - as shown in Wolf Hall Mirror and the Light (well worth a watch).
