Nope, nothing will change. Sandy Hook was the official big shrug from those in power. 20 kids slaughtered by assault rifle in their classroom and… crickets. Since then, many many more school shirtings and more shrugging. Lots of thoughts and prayers, though. Oh, and lots of people blaming the shootings on the state of mental health care. As if other countries don’t have that.

It felt like overnight, they upped the security on the school buildings - each door was given a security code, reception glass with a further security door after it with only staff knowing the codes. I'm sure American schools must have similar, if not greater security, but it doesn't seem to be enough. Those poor people. :(

My OH is a teacher, hate to think her going into work one day to make kids lives better through education and she doesn't return home one day, but then again we hopefully we are a bit more civilised in the UK. I love doing road trips around the US, stunningly beautiful country, but the obsession with guns is just bewildering.

I've watched a few reaction videos on YouTube where Americans get educated on how the UK said NO to guns. It's shocking to them that the UK government just sorted the legislation a nd made our countries a lot safer as a result. It always amazes me that US citizens in vast quantity accept guns and the resultant carnage and just hold their hands up and say "we have the right to bear arms..."

They're very 'pick and choose' when it comes to their precious Constitution. The bit where it says 'well-regulated militia' is ignored completely, and the bit where it says 'bear arms' is highlighted in bright yellow and underlined. They could interpret that first bit very severely, but sadly money talks (where have we heard that before eh?) and the NRA have obscene amounts of it. So nothing will ever change. I'm sure the incoming thoughts and prayers will be really appreciated by the victims' families though.
Another day, another school shooting in America on 08:37 - Dec 17 with 697 views | DJR | Interestingly. the Second Amendment to the United States constitution was based partially on the right to keep and bear arms in English common law and was influenced by the following provision of the English Bill of Rights of 1689. "That the Subjects which are Protestants may have Arms for their Defence suitable to their Conditions and as allowed by Law." This right was subsequently restricted, beginning with laws disarming the Highlands of Scotland following the Jacobite rebellions. It was followed by firearms controls in the Vagrancy Act 1824, which were introduced as a reaction to the large number of people roaming the country with weapons brought back from the Napoleonic wars. There then followed the sort of firearms controls we now have. Sadly, the United States didn't follow suit, and is still stuck in the 18th century when it comes to firearms.
