Is Cat 1 academy something we are aiming for this season? 17:44 - Dec 17 with 1955 viewsHipsterectomy

I need to preface this by saying I have a lot of ignorance about this subject...

Are we aiming for Cat 1 academy this season? Do we have everything in place (coaching, recruiting, training etc) needed?

It seems weird we went all in under Evans (of all owners) to getting it, came close to getting it and then just...didn't bother. I know we have money now so developing 1 or 2 18 year olds for the first team isn't really what we're about, but I would hope we are aspirational to want this in the near future. You also can't be in the U21 league with Prem teams without being Cat 1.

*as a sidenote, how the hell are Reading still a Cat 1 academy, I thought the requirement was you pump a certain amount of ££ in each year

From reading TWTD I believe we are heading for Cat 1 academy. But the buildings design has only just been approved.
I believe I am right to say that building should start in the summer and will take 18 months.
I am sure I will be corrected if I have that wrong.

I think facilities only form a small part of the awarding of Cat 1 status. I think a lot of it comes down to staffing levels and processes and we've recruited quite a few positions within the Academy set up over the past 6 months.

Wasn’t because we didn’t invest in the right software? I seem to remember that whoever was doing the assessing wanted a reason to fail the clubs bid rather than encourage it.

Academy related: Apart from Humphreys and Baggott... and to a lesser extent, Barbrook... who's the next youngster in line who could .... break through or have some kind of senior career elsewhere. ? Losing track and interest in the youngsters ( which is a shame) , but that's a negative side to our growth.
Seeing as we're struggling for a striker in the next game... no-one has even mentioned the 21's number 9. Wouldn't even know a candidate from the academy.

Wasn't the received wisdom at the time that it seemed that the assessors had sought a reason to fail the club, based on not being a Premier League team and that, if the highlighted issues were rectified, it was felt that they'd move the goal posts and find another reason to fail the club next time around?

Came close early on but the requirements became more and more expensive over the years. The aim is to be cat one for next season.

I think that may have been the clubs narrative - but around the same time 2 or 3 other EFL clubs were able to upgrade from Cat 2 to Cat 1

You have to build the facilities and then get invited in. Someone will have to drop out of the existing system for us to get in.

That's not correct, there's no limit on how many are in it - if you hit the criteria then you are in

Looking at the likely phasing of the training ground works I would have thought it unlikely the infrastructure (if that is a requirement) will be difficult to have in place before 2026, likely the start of the 2026-2027 season.

Bobby's teams were mostly home grown. Including interationals in no particular order Burley, Gates, Brazil, Butcher, Osman, Talbot, Wark, Wright, Whymark and finally I am sure Bruce Twamley would like a mention for his time with Canada.

I expect I have missed a few which will be filled in later.

The point being that how much does an international cost to buy ?
Good to grow your own.
Long term investment.

What part of the current administration does not scream "Long term investment" ?

I thought it was because we had failed, but nobody had to tell us what we had failed on.

Reminds me at the time a friend had tried to get social services to pay all the care cost for his Mother. Social Services said sorry you don't match the criteria. He asked where did we fail, they replied we don't have to tell you that, we only have to tell you, you failed as you didn't meet the criteria.
