Bloody hell, that was tough going 18:26 - Dec 21 with 3552 viewsDubtractor

First off - that's a different game if we have Hirst or Delap available. Newcastle knew we had no outlet at all, and could press high and hard without fear that we had an out ball. Even allowing for that initial caveat though, we got so much wrong, and a number of players were really poor.

Was surprised that we hooked Omari but left Chaplin on at half time, as Chaplin couldn't trap a bag of cement today, and nothing was working for him at all. Across the team we gave the ball away at will.

For the first goal I don't understand why Burgess didn't just head the long ball out, rather than allow it to drop and then get caught behind. Balls in behind gave Burgess big problems all game, and his lack of pace was horribly exposed. Even then it felt like we had a couple of chances to clear and failed to do so.

Second goal I need to see again, but felt like it was straight down the middle and you want Muric to be stopping it.

Third goal was an absolute horror show, and I can't explain how Muric thought that was a sensible pass to play, even if the pass was asked for. Though my point above about no outlet stands here, as Newcastle had flooded our box knowing that in the unlikely event we went long they would instantly win it back.

Fourth goal we were statuesque in our defending.

To be honest 4-0 probably flattered us based on the chances created, and we created nothing of note all game. It was men against boys.

Burns is a real problem for us if he isn't going to back himself against full backs. Morsy was uncharacteristically careless with the ball. Szmodics is very evidently not able to play as a 9 at this level. In fact pretty much every player was well below the standard you'd hope for, with 2 players probably given a pass.

Broadhead showed a level of composure and technique that was lacking elsewhere. Al Hamadi is clearly not at the level we need this season, but he at least gave us a presence up front and asked a few questions of their defence with some decent runs.

Us being rubbish today doesn't mean we are rubbish overall, much like poor individual performances don't make players rubbish, but man we need some of our absent players back soon. Really need to add an extra sprinkling of quality in January too, to give ourselves a fighting chance of escaping the drop.

If I may say so, good summary.

Szmodics, Omari, Burns and Chaplin all starting against the outrageously physical Newcastle is relatively ridiculous.

We just bounced off their defenders. When you couple this with Leif being kind of caught between attacking cavalry and part of a relatively immobile high line we were lucky to only lose 4-0.

Our season won't be decided today but it's the occasional reminder that we have our work set out to get 30+ points.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Not a sprinking. More a cascade. And we didn't do that well in the summer. Some hits. And some definite misses. Forest went crazy that first summer and got enough right to just stay up. Just. We need a sh#t load of quality in Jan to stand a chance of staying up.

Different game maybe but certainly not a different result. It was a walk in the park for them.

I was gonna say. Delap/Hirst don't stop that first goal, nor the third and I doubt we'd score 2.

Good summary.

I actually don’t think Delap or Hirst would have made much difference. They were so much better in every area, every aspect it was savage.

Broadhead? I’ve always thought he deserved a chance, but I don’t think you can judge his performance today. He took part in a last half hour training session where Newcastle had the cigars and drinks out and never bothered beyond first gear.

Agree with everything else though.

The question I’d ask is with regard to transfer activity - do we recruit with a view to building a strong Championship team with players that might be able to step up Omari or Delap style or try and salvage PL status with some experience that’ll cost and may not add much in the future?

Dan Burn was their number 33 right?

He was massive, it was literally like men against boys with our front players with him, they were all tiny in comparison. Not that we had much to actually offer up there mind. But t was a real mismatch of physicality.

Just to respond to the point you and others have made about Delap/Hirst not changing the result - that's probably true, but my point really was that it just made it too easy for Newcastle to press high and hard, which meant that we couldn't even get a foothold in the game. Look at our first goal against Wolves last week that basically came from a clearance that Delap turned into a chance - that couldn't happen today and Newcastle knew that.

Compounded by Muric playing it long.

It was basically a 90 minutes heading practice for Burn. He's ridiculous.

Incredible how good he was with his feet too. We keep finding this is the prem. Massive units who can play football. We are ill equipped in reality.

Shows the difference both Delap and Tuanzebe make at either end I think.

At least I am now in the queue to see The Prodigy, takes the sting out a bit for me.

You’re spot on with that Dub, no out ball meant we were horribly exposed trying to play through their press, which, as if we needed it, was as good as any we’ve come up against this season. Add in the physicality, the PL experience and the technical superiority they enjoyed it was a result waiting to happen

He would have offered a bit more up front so I get your point, but I don’t think it’d have made the slightest difference really. That bloke Burn was even bigger than him!

They could have scored any number of goals. Mills afterwards had it right. We were outplayed in every area, every aspect. But he reserved his biggest concerns for midfield. I agree with the great man. It was so poor. offered no control or cover for defence or support for the forwards.

So why play effectively the same system?

Given we had, and we knew in advance that we had, no outlet perhaps 3 in the middle of the park may have served us better.

We lose 4 or 5 nil?

TBH I think it was terribly naive of KM

I have been thinkingit for a while. Our front 4 made absolutely no impact, play 4-3-3 and gain a little control

But we're also too slow moving the ball. Twice in the first half Szmodics made an excellent run from the half way line but it wasn't passed over the top to him. He then has to come back onside. Yes Delap is better at holding the line/ball, but with a high press we should be looking at quick balls over the top, but we didn't.
Even if Delap had played it still won't make any difference to the score today. Let's be real it was only poor finishing by them that stopped in being 7 or 8

For those who are into heavy criticism today:

Yes it was a bad day at the office but some of the comments on the match report are simply unreal.
Newcastles wage bill is at almost £100 mill pa almost exactly three times ours at £33mill.

Our £33mill is the lowest budget in the prem by some margin. The next two are Brentford £41.5 mill and Wolves £53 mill!

For us to finish anywhere other than 20th will be quite an achievement for all concerned.

Facts however will not deter the entitled and the boo boys.

True supporters should appreciate the progress that has been made and (relegation or not) the platform that is being built.

A really good summary,

It's no surprise our three worst defeats have come against three physical teams in Newcastle, Everton and West Ham. We just can't deal with them and haven't got the personnel to compete.

Hmm...Muric shouldn't have been kicking it long but gets pelters when we play it our from the back & lose possession? Seems like he can't win.

the long ball for the first goal was nowhere near Burgess. He couldn't possibly have reached it.
No keeper should have stopped the 2nd goal.

Every time we played it out short, every player had a man or two men on them. Three or four passes and they won it back. Hoof it long to the odd person up front, their giants swallowed it up. Any knockdowns, our midfield and anyone else were far too far away to pick them up so back the ball came. Contested 50/50s - it felt like they won the vast majority.

They literally ran rings around us. They were not Leeds Leicester or Southampton from last year. They were a country mile better than that. Add in how poorly our better players played and there you have it.

Agree on all points.

It was an awful showing today, that's for sure, but everyone seems to be forgetting that the main objective for this season has always been to stay up. Teams who finish 17th are going to have awful showings and get pumped, especially when playing a team with the quality of Newcastle (who are playing their best football all season).

We go again. Uppa Towun!
