Formation Change 10:53 - Dec 24 with 1843 views | bournemouthblue | 4231 has got us so far but do we have the personnel to get the most of it against the better sides in this league? I would say no and a switch to a 541 or variations of it, would at least help us defensively, it's not like we have been ripping it up going forward is it. I'm fairly sure we went through a phase of experimenting with the overlapping centre back system as well so it's not like McKenna hasn't implemented it before It's not a drastic shift in system, it just relies on picking sides off on the counter a little bit more [Post edited 24 Dec 2024 10:53]

Formation Change on 11:03 - Dec 24 with 1782 views | Asa | It's hard to move from a system that has served us so ridiculously well but with injuries and some players struggling to make the impact that others have managed it does seem a logical move at this stage. Delap Chaplin Hutchison Davis Morsy Cajuste Johnson Burgess Greaves O'Shea Muric When going forwards that looks decent. Clarke I'd rather see going forward than defending in this system, Burns can do a job on the right too. Szmodics can play in the Chaplin role too, Woolfy can cover one of those positions. It does seem to make a lot more sense defensively but the issue then is we took the game to Villa and United and Fulham and could have easily won. If we sit back too much against these sides are we just inviting them to cause us problems. It's not as if we are scoring loads being more adventurous so maybe McKenna thinks we can win 1 in 5 playing this way is better than holding on for 2 draws and losing the other 3. It's a very fine line between the two systems for me but the injuries we have would make me a little more inclined to play three centre backs, have Leif able to bomb on and tweak things in the middle and in the 10's a little.

I get what you're saying but I'm not sure how much we lose by getting another defending in there if the likes of Burns or Chappers are being nullified any way Our greatest attacking outlet is generally Davis, if this system gives him more cover, it can't be a bad thing? In this system, one of your centre backs becomes a midfielder at times, whether we have a player good enough to do it in the Prem is another question

Formation Change on 23:16 - Dec 25 with 1389 views | Nutkins_Return | We don't play that rigidly and we have had differences against different opposition albeit subtle. Leif Davis just doesn't play in that 4. Hence why some of the analysis of him is wrong on the likes of MOTD. Not to say everything you say is wrong. There is definitely an argument to be had for a slightly more defensive unit against certain teams. But I think you do risk going down with a whimper as I think we have to be brave and take some wins where we can get it. I just seen us creating so little if we went more defensive. We just have to accept more defeats and hope to turn some of the draws into wins for me.

Formation Change on 00:37 - Dec 26 with 1311 views | PioneerBlue | KMcK is constantly tweaking for games and in games. It’s taken three years for people to understand our asymmetrical system which looks different in and out of possession. It also looks different based on personnel. A big variation last season was losing the more conventional full back on the right when Tuanzebe helped us defensively in his hybrid role. With him out and us starting to concede goals there is very likely a version of this to be looked at more closely using an extra CB. I’m not really disagreeing with the OP but it’s not as if we aren’t already using different variations that look like anything from 343, to 4231, or 5221 [Post edited 26 Dec 2024 9:27]

1 in 5 would be a huge improvement on the 1 in 8 to 9 record so far. What are the chances of achieving that?
| Veni Vidi Participatur. Now we can get back to competing. |

You don’t think Greaves should start?

I think everyone agrees that we play different 'ways' in a o0 minute game. However that also comes with every player having to be capable of playing the different roles.. which perhaps is more our issue. If you got with a h clarke fullback option for example. It limits what you can actually do with the backline as he's pretty much just a fullback. With wes he's a flying high wingback only really effective up high on the right. If you're then trying to have a back 5 and he's dropping deep, he's not effective and it doesn't work compared to when we had johnson doing it or ogebene. Etc etc

If you play that then you have to have SS instead of CC in my opinion. I feel CC is so good as a 10 in the middle of the three behind but need the energy of SS to play as a two behind Delap. It worked excellently against Spurs.
Formation Change on 16:11 - Dec 26 with 809 views | pointofblue | Muric O'Shea - Burgess - Greaces Johnson - Cajuste - Phillips - Taylor - Davis Szmodics Delap Subs: Walton, Townsend, Woolfenden, Luongo, Burns, Hutchinson, J Clarke, Chaplin, Broadhead Muric or Walton is a big question for me. As is Chaplin or Szmodics. Taylor gives us flexibility to either play with two tens or a middle three. Hutchinson's pace can be utilised from the bench. Broadhead is the replacement striker for when Delap tires.
