If we go down it’ll be ‘cos we don’t score enough goals/create enough 22:33 - Dec 27 with 1562 viewstractorboy1978

Defended about as well as we could have done today. Stuck to the game plan well, only conceded once and gave ourselves a chance. But had xG of 0.16. We are coming in at xG of less than 1 all too often and are too wasteful/ponderous at times when we do break into good positions. Don’t know what sort of FFP headroom we have but we really need to have a proper go at the top end of the pitch in January.

100%. During that 2nd half where we performed a lot better we get ourselves in good positions to get the ball into the box, but instead try and make an extra pass or we don’t get enough shots off either. Like our players lack confidence in that final third and are afraid to take responsibility.

You would wonder where that lack of confidence is coming from?

Absolutely. I said as much in a previous thread and also McKenna alluded to this during the post match interview when suggesting it was probably more a lack of belief when not making better decisions in the final third. However he also felt the more solid defensive performance will hopefully give the players more confidence. Fingers crossed for Monday.

We are the third lowest scorers in this league, this has stemmed from the very first game, it’s not something that has slowly crept up on us. It’s not like we aren’t getting in good positions either. Hutch tonight, a prime example, the opportunity to cross the ball in then gave the chance away with an extra pass or trying to take an extra touch and beat his man. Just get it in the box!

I really think Omari/Delap need a hand. They are carrying the whole weight of the team in an attacking sense at the moment and it probably isn't fair.

That was called out by many on here when it became apparent we’d failed to land a striker.

Was a critical mistake. Look at what we almost achieved at Brentford with having Hirst for the first 65/70 mins and Delap for the rest. If we could do that every week we’d have been so much more successful.

Defensively we probably have got better, offensively we have struggled for a variety of reasons

You can bet your bottom dollar we would go back to looking a million dollars in the Championship again

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

We rely on a defender as our chief assist maker. Our midfield goal/assist stats are appalling. I am amazed Delap has as many goals as he has to be honest. You don't cross/shoot you don't score. All too often we find ourselves in the final third and five passes later its back with the keeper. We need a midfielder who can attack and create in January if we have any hope whatsoever of staying up, Phillips/Cajuste,Morsy can't do that, Hutch/Clarke/Burns all struggling.

KM set us up for 0-0 last night, very much in the style of MM, but I think he had to try and stop the defensive rot.
But we aren't going to score goals with 5 in defence unless we try the occasional suicide pass, ie one player picks up the ball and immediately tries a long cross field ball to open up the opposition.
We aren't doing that because we've conceded too many goals already this season from us being in an attacking position. The players have lost confidence.
Even Jack Taylor had a chance to shoot last night when the Arsenal defence opened up for him, but choose a short pass instead.
It's that classic confidence loss, player won't shoot because he knows if it goes flying wide he will only hear groans from the fans.

That is resulting in the players turning back and passing it short, rather than even trying a cross. It has been gradually getting worse through the season, but against Palace, it really came to the fore.
Funnily enough Arsenal were just as bad in making short passes, trying to walk the ball into the net.

I am not just talking about last night, I am talking generally this season.

I think we've generally defended pretty well this season. 33 conceded but 16 of those came in 4 games. You will get the odd spanking at this level. So 17 conceded in the remaining 14 games. But in those requisite games we've only scored 11 goals.

We are on course to score less goals than the woeful Sheff Utd managed last season. Luton got 52 goals but conceded too many (85). That was how I saw our season going before a ball was kicked but it has been the opposite.
