Morsy's place still guaranteed? 22:11 - Jan 5 with 3556 views | LancsBlue | Not particularly referencing his giving away of the first penalty at Fulham, but has there been signs of a drop off? He's guaranteed legendary status and has been our most important and effective player in both our promotions. However, he is 33 and although he keeps very fit, how much longer can continue to be our midfield dynamo? When 100% fit are we moving towards a Cajuste/Phillips partnership? or maybe a new January or summer signing coming in. It was noticeable that McKenna's eulogy to him last week was largely in the past tense. Was he paving the way for Morsy to become more of a squad player and no longer the first name on the teamsheet? I'm not convinced that he will continue to start every match for the rest of the season.

Morsy's place still guaranteed? on 22:27 - Jan 5 with 3000 views | NeverSayDie | He’s the only CM we’ve got that hasn’t got perpetual injury and/or fitness issues and can actually play a full 90 minutes. Whilst not setting the world alight, he’s still fairly consistent and provides valuable contributions, until more signings are made in the middle, he’ll continue to be the “go to” on the team sheet, it also doesn’t hurt that he’s Captain.
Morsy's place still guaranteed? on 22:35 - Jan 5 with 2934 views | PioneerBlue | Yes he is the captain until he isn’t or until he needs a rest he’s first name on the sheet after Muric (soz Walton).

Morsy's place still guaranteed? on 22:39 - Jan 5 with 2898 views | bsw72 | Morsy does a huge amount of work which is not noticed, link passes, interceptions, marking and coverage. His standards are not dropping, in fact I have been impressed with his ability to step up and compete at this level. The penalty today was unfortunate but a few weeks ago he chased down and won a tackle (can’t remember the game) which prevented a certain goal. People need to better appreciate *all* the things that Morsy does well which far outweighs mistakes like the penalty today. [Post edited 5 Jan 22:43]

He was involved in 100+ duals in a match? Where is the stat from? Incredible work rate. [Post edited 5 Jan 22:50]

Morsy's place still guaranteed? on 22:49 - Jan 5 with 2806 views | _clive_baker_ | Clearly still has a big role to play this season on and off the pitch, but questioning his starting involvement shouldn’t be off the table, and I dare say McKenna will be considering all options. Don’t think we need caveat it with what a contribution he’s made since he joined, he’s been an unbelievable captain and performer which goes without saying, but with Phillips sat on the bench and getting back to full fitness I do wonder if there’s a baton pass soon. Morsy does a lot really well, but he’s not the most dynamic and he slows us down at times for me. That extra touch or 2, sometimes the speed of thought isn’t quite there against premier league opposition. That’s not to say Phillips has blown me away or would’ve made the difference against the likes of Tonali & Bruno, I dare say he wouldn’t, but the only 2 games he’s started alongside Cajuste were Brentford & Arsenal which while both defeats, were both heartening performances for different reasons. I thought Phillips looked really good against Leicester as well, he’s got that extra bit on the ball to move it faster, that Morsy perhaps doesn’t, as consistent as he’s been. I don’t think McKenna is quite there yet but there’s a big part of me now that thinks the potential rotation of the likes of Godfrey & Phillips with their premier league experience coming in for Woolfy & Morsy might just be that 1% that turns more of the fine margins in our favour. Morsy would be a lovely option to come off the bench in games like today. [Post edited 5 Jan 22:52]

What constitutes a duel? If it includes aerial then I am not surprised, that’s not his strength due to his height. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If you’re referring to the footballfancast page, it doesn’t state how it measures the 2/7 duels, but also highlights he completed 31/33 passes. The trouble is with all of these stats is it doesn’t measure everything a player does.
Morsy's place still guaranteed? on 23:12 - Jan 5 with 2647 views | JammyDodgerrr | I'd drop him for that penalty give away alone. Honestly, what is a pro of his level doing in the moment? One of the worst penalties I've ever seen a team give away. Anyway, I've been saying for weeks we need to get Phillips in and I don't think much has changed. It feels like his range of passing is the final piece of the puzzle so I hope we see it soon.

I think the value of certain stats shift massively, dependent on the formation being played, which is something that is never taken into consideration. For instance, the 5 back (or 3 into 5 etc, however people wish to view it) we have adopted recently by it’s nature awards huge amounts of possession, territory and subsequently shots to the opposition, but the key is controlling the opposition possession, pushing them wide and forcing them into less dangerous shooting areas and it’s worked, they get frustrated, shoot from all over the place and then we go and nick a goal from nowhere, the stats are completely irrelevant in that scenario, every “x” whatever would have us losing by 97 goals.

Very true. Listening to the radio today heard that Trent AA lost 100% of his “duels” yesterday against a low mid table side, must be rubbish so Liverpool should get rid.

McKenna is the brain of our team, and Morsy is the heart; when he plays, every player on the pitch is 5% better. Although we set up tactically to sit off Arsenal, we lacked a bit of our usual aggression in that game and I don't think it's a coincidence that Morsy was missing, as it's happened before. Still the first name on the team sheet for me - hopefully he and Cajuste will be at the club for at least another 18 months, so Cajuste can develop into his long term replacement.

Hes not far off is it. No where near the ball. No need for it and only caught the back of his calf anyway. It's definitely one of the worst for town I reckon.

I think people are going way OTT. Look at the Southampton or Man Utd ones yesterday. He sticks a leg out and it’s foolish, but I can think of countless handballs, pullbacks, wrestles from town (Volz/David Wright/De Vos/Chambers) over the years much worse than Morsy’s. To be clear I think Morsy’s was incredibly stupid and it annoyed the hell out of me but this is hyperbole really.

Clumsy yes but I don't agree awful - at the speed the game is played at the top flight I am surprised we have not given away more penalties.
Morsy's place still guaranteed? on 09:11 - Jan 6 with 1761 views | ArnieM | Here's sone FACTS about our midfield dynamo, collected by someone else and posted on another forum,so I'm not stealing it. Most minutes this season other than Davis - Highest pass percentage of any player - Most tackles per game by any player - Most dribbles per game by any player - Most intercepts per game by a non defender - Most clearances per game by a non defender And that's just the stats I quickly checked, he tops everything, it shows how well he's played, how important he is, and how wrong the thread questioning him before the season was. It will be weird when he steps aside after being the most pivotal player to our rise from League 1, but I've questioned his age for a few seasons now, so you never know... he could have more time in him than we think!!

It's literally nonsense. He just kicks him in the knee for no reason. He's not close enough to the ball, there's two defenders right in front of the attacker, and he's going nowhere. Morsy just rocks up and takes a swipe for no reason. He should know better.
