Kevin Bru
Colin Healy
Kayden Jackson
Alex Bruce

Can’t place my finger on exactly why, but you just grow attached to certain players don’t you.

Also shout out to Gary Roberts and his arm/running style. Beautiful

He was no Myles Kenlock though in that respect...

As an old fe**er mine are from much further back
Danny Hegan
Frank Brogan
Funnily enough, a few years after I’d starting watching Town I worked with a guy who was the dead spit of Frank Brogan and was subsequently known to all and sundry as ‘Brogan’. Can’t recall his real name know.

As a child I liked Derek Jefferson. ‘No nonsense’ didn’t cover it. Crashed into anything that moved - man, ball, both.

I liked his nickname. ‘Chopper’, sometimes ‘hacker’. That kind of said it all. That was in an age of real animals too. Allan Hunter came along and then Kevin Beattie who were both light years better players and just as hard, but I always smile when I think of Chopper Jefferson.

Thanks for reminding us of him. Was what was known at the time as a ‘no nonsense defender’. Translated as ‘if it moves, kick it, if it doesn’t move then kick it until it does move’. Big crowd pleaser.

Some really interesting replies to this!

Who do you think was towns first ‘cult’ hero? I started going in ‘96 so the first one I remember was probably Gus.

Surprised no one has said Thetis. But then again I didn’t either.

There were always players we liked and weren’t so keen on, but the first cult hero in the sense you mean? I actually can’t think of any before Gus.

I have a clear memory of him hitting the post with a thunderbolt and someone scoring the tap in.

Oh no I'm not saying ing NW was its just that he came with high hopes ( from Rangers?) but it soon became apparent John Duncan managerial career had already peaked!

I should start by saying that Janoi is also on my list of players who have been my favourites in the squad, which probably goes something like (in sequence):

90-96: Neil Thompson
96 - 08: Richard Naylor
09-11: Gareth McAuley
12-13: Aaron Cresswell
14-18: David McGoldrick
19-23: Janoi Donacien
24-present: Cam Burgess

It is interesting how people have players they irrationally love and others they irrationally dislike. Someone put Darren Currie in this thread as one of their favourites - whereas for me he would feature in my top three most disliked players who have played 50+ games for Ipswich. Whilst I would never resort to booing a Town player, I can't pretend that the words 'you're f***ing useless Currie' didn't eminate very loudly from me on a near weekly basis 20 years ago.

From my early years of going to matches I would say John O'Rourke (of the famous 'He's here, he's there, he's everyf**kinwhere' chant) but I suspect that Sticks Leadbetter was a cult hero before then.

i liked darren currie - possibly the first town player to kiss the badge - but for me he summed up the joe royle era. good, entertaining but just not good enough to secure promotion. he had a wand of a left foot, and if he had an extra yard of pace (or any pace) he'd have been magnificent.
