Happy 60th birthday to David Linighan on 10:42 - Jan 9 by Steve_M | It was a criticism of Burley's optimistic naivety rather than any of those who played at OT but good point on the 3-2. |
Well, when we played at MU that season the signs were ominous before the game even started. We were poor. That was a scary back line to say the least. No reflection on Linighan in particular - scary poor, confidence shot applied to the whole team by then. Looking at results we were getting humped by just about everyone that season and picked up only 7 points from the end of Jan on. That included a win against Southampton at home 2-1 and 2-0 v Coventry when we were already toast. .

Not too many choices either, think GB never forgave Whelan for getting sent off in his first match (two bookings for dissent was particularly stupid) and Youds refused to improve his off pitch standards apparently. At least the Man Utd game I only knew the final score but, listening to Leeds away for example it felt like it could be similar in the first half.

I sometimes wonder whether Linighan’s under-rating is because he didn’t play much of a role in our stabilisation in the second tier over the following two seasons. We went down in 94/95, widely tipped to do a Swindon and drop straight through into the third tier, but it didn’t happen. 95/96 & 96/97 all saw plenty of key contributions from guys who had been part of the 91/92 squad or signed during the 92-95 Premier League stint. But Linighan only played two league games in 95/96 and was at Blackpool by the new year.

Perhaps, I seem to remember one of those games was against Luton and it was a particularly poor one. I rated him highly in the second division, he did ok in the Premier but was in obvious decline by the time he left.

Happy 60th birthday to David Linighan on 11:35 - Jan 12 with 1313 views | gainsboroughblue | I didn't think he would last more than a season when he joined. He really did have a tough start and the crowd did get on his back. Looked really unsteady in possession, gave away lots of fouls. Had the back pass rule been introduced that season, he'd have been a real liability. I seem to remember his wife miscarrying as well in that first year as well and all in all things were conspiring against him settling. Second half of that first season, he was a monster and got better and better from there. Ended up being our title winning captain though my aged brain remembers him accepting the trophy before the Brighton game in his full kit but then having to sit in the stands as he was injured. 7 years excellent service in the end. He was a real team man and wasn't a man to mess with if you played against him. Hope you had a great birthday Mr L.

Yep, remember the second Whelan sending off against Arsenal at Portman Road. Gives away a clear foul, and whilst running away, says something. Problem is, it was during one of those moments when the stadium is pretty quiet, and the ref can hear it clear as day even though Whelan is running away. Whistle blown again, and a massive groan goes around the stands, because we all know what's coming. Memorable for Simon Milton yelling "Phil! PHIL!!!!!" to get Whelan to come back. Phil Whelan wasn’t saying too much when his foot wound up pointing in the wrong direction I think against Man Utd. He wasn’t a happy bunny. But then it was a vomit bag job.

I agree will a lot of what posters have said year in terms of how underrated he was and the little recognition he gets compared to other center halves or Captains. Was also in the old Div 2 PFA team of the year amongst some very good players. Captained our club for 3 years in the Premier League. If you read John Wark's book you will see how highly rated he was by JW. Jack Charlton also wanted him to play for Ireland. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Well done for mentioning John Wark's autobiography, where he said something like Linighan's signing was, pound for pound, the best value fee that the club ever paid. A bold claim considering the list includes the likes of Mariner, Muhren, Thijssen etc, but shows how highly Warky rated him. He also mentioned that DL would regularly turn up for training reeking of alcohol.

Me too, a 3-1 win if my memory is correct. Think Whitton scored too, he had a cracking season for us in that promotion campaign.

Didn't Bontcho sink us in that game, 1-0, and that ultimately cost us the Playoffs? Linegan was way off the pace that day, it was apparent he wouldn't be able to play at that level any longer. Craig Burley tells a story about being wiped out by him not long after, as a revenge tackle for what his Uncle did, must have been a reserve or cup fixture as I can't recall Chelsea playing Blackpool around that time.

Bontcho came on as a sub, Oldfield scored the goal.

You might as well give them a hoof in the left circumstances at the same time - after all they're right there in the same bag.
