You mean the austerity that was needed after Labour last wrecked the economy and Gordon Brown sold off our gold reserves for a song. When it comes to fiscal incompetence, Labour win it hands down.

I think it's fairly well agreed that Cameron + Osborne's policies from 2010 after the financial crisis were essentially and unforced error. People debate whether it was a macroeconomic error, however more than a decade later, it was clearly a social and political catastrophe.
Rachel from Accounts is doing a Sterling job on 16:58 - Jan 9 with 2479 views | positivity | the old pound due to a new low since liz truss crashed the economy, can certainly blame the tories for that one! when the fundamentals are left in such a mess it's going to take significantly longer than 6 months to turn it around

You mean the world financial crisis...? I'm not even going to bother debating who is more financially credible when the image of Liz Truss is still burned into my retinas so painfully.

So 1. Not 15 years then and 2. They borrowed a massive amount of money its just that it went on other things like pandemics and 3. When they did fund infrastructure projects like HS2 the cost kept going up so much that it was infeasible to do it all. Ps. Not supporting the tories but just balance. And also rachel reeves should never have promised no tax rises on individuals. Just reversed one of the two NI cuts [Post edited 9 Jan 17:03]

Rachel from Accounts is doing a Sterling job on 17:03 - Jan 9 with 2367 views | radiogaga | It does amuse me how all the people that oppose labour are suddenly now complaining that all the things that have been in a state for ages (like the economy) are in a state now, having completely denied anything was wrong for the last 14 years. What we really need is another Liz Truss mini budget to put things back on the right track like the good old days. [Post edited 9 Jan 17:05]

You say pedantic, I say a lost decade. It turns out that exploiting debt fears to engineer cuts in public spending does not work out quite the way small-government advocates had hoped. Have a think about that next time you're waiting in A&E for 10 hours.

Speaking about that particular champion of free speech she doesn’t like Keir using his right to free speech. Strange how the defenders of Tommy Two-Names always try to shut down debate when they are being criticised. https://news.sky.com/story/amp/liz-truss-sends-cease-and-desist-letter-to-sir-ke

Even I was dismayed that Truss was made PM to be fair. I think I said so at the time. It was only ever going to end badly. But Reeves is hardly turning out much different. Her budgetary policy is obviously not working.

free speech is only for the right wing... not sure why she's so sensitive about crashing the economy when she blatantly crashed the economy!

however the tory party membership were happy to vote her in and cheer her to the rafters. the current movers and shakers in the tory (and reform) leadership were more than happy to support and congratulate her on her suicidal budget. reeves hasn't made the best of starts, but comparatively speaking she's doing far, far better!

I think labour have said that this additional funding is probably the max and that somehow the answer to it cant all be about money. Did I say pedantic? Theres plenty of reasons to be fearful about the level of debt we have. #communitynote

Clearly that was down to the world banking crisis though wasn't it. I think I'm right in saying that all those years of austerity and underinvestment and the national debt is higher now than when they started

We would have had austerity whichever party won the 2010 election. "Alistair Darling admitted tonight that Labour's planned cuts in public spending will be "deeper and tougher" than Margaret Thatcher's in the 1980s, as the country's leading experts on tax and spending warned that Britain faces "two parliaments of pain" to repair the black hole in the state's finances". https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2010/mar/25/alistair-darling-cut-deeper-mar

the labour austerity wouldn't have been so punitive and would have protected the nhs and education. the tory version was a political choice

You're confusing debt with deficit. Austerity was necessary to reduce the deficit. The debt was always going to get higher.
