The almost constant injury situation had contributed to most of that. 2 half of the season will be different. Once Axel is back fully I think we'll line up as follows: (Pending further signings)

...........................Walton

............Godfrey......O'Shea......Greaves

Tuanzebe..........................................Davis

....................Morsy.........Philips

Hutchinson........................................Philogene

...........................Delap

Finishing with Cajuste, Broadhead, Burns and Hirst most games.

I think we return to our 4-2-3-1 system for the Southampton game, personally.

Muric
Tuanzebe O'Shea Greaves Davis
Morsy Cajuste
New Signing Omari Jaden
Delap

On current form I cannot see Phillips usurping Cajuste. Also, I think Tuanzebe will play RCB and Godfrey RWB.

Cajuste has looked out of form in recent games.

You might be right on Tuanzebe/Godfrey but my thinking was the fact that Axel had (I think*), some of the best 1 on 1 stats in that positions.

Loads of teams have a lot of injuries.

Happy to be corrected if there is a precedent that i'm not remembering... but I think there is 0% chance we see Tuanzebe in that role. He just doesn't offer enough engine or threat going forward. Doubly so Assuming O'Shea is fit and firing then Godfrey and Tuanzebe are competing for the same spot.

I actually think when we set up in a more 3 at the back approach that Woolfenden's calmness on the ball and passing is essential in the middle to compensate for having an extra defensive minded player in there but McKenna seems to have moved away from that.

Is that significantly different to last season?

He has always chopped and changed the team even when not dealing with injuries, to reduce fatigue or tweak system/approach.

That is just how McKenna manages.

McKenna has dropped Woolfenden twice this season, after signing players to take his place. He'll be warming himself in the stands for the rest of the season, unless injuries hit or he asks to move on.

I hope we keep to a back three. I don't think a back four really works at this level with the players at our disposal.

In the games where we must go for all three points, 4-2-3-1 is a must to get our front three more involved behind Delap.

The 3-4-2-1 system we currently use just isn't getting enough bodies around Delap in the main IMO.

That coupled with a lot of the signings coming in late.

Yes, you are right there. And I'm sure you are right in that we'll play 4-2-3-1.
Worth remembering though that 16% of Southamptons points came against us playing that formation.

However, I think we'll blow them away this time.
