Classic transfer window fun and games here... 09:41 - Jan 22 with 5150 views | SaffronWaldenBlues | Missed out on Doak, Ali's move breaks down, Edmundson recalled so he can be sold, and now Julio Enciso on loan. I am sad to see Edmundson go, as I expected him to be able to do a job for us next season if we drop down. I don't want to be negative about a new player, but I never much rated Enciso and thought he was far too lightweight for the Premier League, and has an injury history. I'd say our squad is already a bit too much on the smaller side, and we have our own players with ongoing injury issues (such as Hirst and Axel). Hopefully, he will come good for us and McKenna can get the best out of him and the move proves me wrong. We have needed another good striker in the mold of Hirst/Delap for a number of windows now and seemingly keep failing to get our man. It's very frustrating, if Delap was to get injured we'd be absolutely stuffed.

Classic transfer window fun and games here... on 10:00 - Jan 22 by _clive_baker_ | I suspect we were in a bit of a corner, if we didn't recall him in the contractual window we would've lost any leverage. As it is we've maybe retained a smidgen, if Boro want him back to help them get promoted then they'll need to buy him. But we've also inherited the risk of forgoing any contribution they were making in his loan arrangement. Perhaps we're confident we can find him a club outside of the English leagues where the 2 club rule doesn't apply? |
It's not just the English leagues, it's any FIFA winter league (i.e. all of mainland Europe). He could go somewhere like the MLS who run a summer league (in Northern Hemisphere terms)

Classic transfer window fun and games here... on 10:15 - Jan 22 by PhilTWTD | In terms of Town's outlay on players over the last couple of windows, it's peanuts. Had they wanted to, I think the recall date could have been moved back a week or so. |
There must also be an option to re-loan him to Boro if we can't agree a permanent deal just to save on wages at end of the window

Classic transfer window fun and games here... on 10:30 - Jan 22 by PhilTWTD | Out of contract in a few months, when he will go on a free and can't go anywhere else this window, so Town not in a particularly strong position, other to deny Boro a player they want. |
Ah, understand, thanks 👍

Why I say this is because KM is mates with Michael Carrick, not that Town are in a position for Borough to get mates rates for any deal and presume the basis for recall is to force Boroughs hand and it seems they are trying to get a player on the cheap. We obviously need to shift three players, maybe more if this latest target gets done and there are any others incoming. Although I suspect the latest deal if it goes through may be the last and we will try to see out the season with three new recruits.

Really hope George gets the move if he wants it, doesn't appear that Middlesbrough have any competitors in the market who would have helped to inflate the price, so they should be trying to get him as cheaply as possible We're now on the loadsamoney side of the massive financial gulf between PL and FL, and Boro will have seen us splashing tens of millions mainly buying players from their division, but stopping a transfer out for a relative few (for a loadsamoney) hundred thousand. If Ashton would rather pay an unwanted player, who was always a credit to the club on and off the field, for the rest of the season than be beaten in a sales negotiation, shame on him.

Ashton has a duty though to ensure that we get the best deal for the Club as well as the player. I have no issue with that.

I understand Clarke for development but Wolfenden has been very hard done by, he's had a couple of fantastic seasons. I think Clarke still could make the grade too.

Paying a player we don't want, don't need and won't use is not the best deal for anyone. Ashton's ego should not be the priority.

I think we have simply recalled to facilitate the sale going through, I am pretty sure that's the convention. Unless we need cover, I cannot see any other reason for him coming back.

Given the transfer window isn't closed as yet - the situation you describe hasn't come to fruition. Recalling him is an aspect of the loan deal that was agreed between the Clubs when he went there, and using it can be seen as a way of ensuring some additional funds from Boro for any transfer - a smart, sensible move that many clubs have used before. If he ends up staying with us for the rest of the season, not registered and not playing - then you can argue your point. Otherwise, I am not sure what your point is other than a spurious dig at Ashton. [Post edited 22 Jan 11:25]

It's only a 6 month contract. If they want him they should offer more if they get promoted. It's win win for them.

I don't disagree. All I am saying is that if the roles were reversed, we would have no issue with us putting in a cheeky bid for the player in this situation. I don't see that as an issue, insulting or weird. Now, for things as they stand, I think our response is normal and to be expected (as Carrick himself has said). A deal will be done - so no issues here for me, from either side.

Classic transfer window fun and games here... on 09:56 - Jan 22 by tractorboy1978 | I'd say we hold no leverage! Unless we are genuinely happy to pay Edmundson's full wages and let him sit outside of the squad not playing for 6 months. But McKenna wouldn't allow that as it would be a sh!t way to treat a player that has been part of our rise and given us a lot off the pitch as well as on it. |
I find it all very odd. I thought it was slightly vindictive to terminate Simpson's loan with Swindon when he'd been doing so well, but then we did get £500k from Huddersfield for him, so it did work. The difference here is that he is out of contract at the end of the year, and Boro have no rival bidders because he can't play for a third club. So the question is whether Boro want to bid against themselves. If they don't then we look really foolish. If somehow this is an incredible tactic to help us land Doak, then kudos. But that doesn't look at all likely.

I suppose so, but not sure they'd be willing to do that. That's sort of, we can't agree a deal, but have him for nothing anyway.

Classic transfer window fun and games here... on 10:01 - Jan 22 by Kieran_Knows | Yeah, a slightly odd situation. And given the reported sums we've been offered (appreciate we'll never know the full in and outs of the deal), I'm surprised we've not taken it given he can walk away for nothing in 6 months whilst we also pay his wages for that period. |
Yeah, I would definitely have pushed them as much as possible but ultimately cut and run and got the deal done. As you say we don't know the details, but speculating we're potentially walking away from c.£500k on the table, plus incurring the incremental wages between now and July. Feels odd, he might be left here without a squad place and playing no football for 6 months.
