Apologies for going a bit mumsnet but has anyone else seen it?
I got somewhat reluctantly dragged along to watch it at the cinema (a rare experience for me) and was actually really surprised it was decent.
I get that lots of people can't stand him/hate his music etc so it won't be for you - I'm a bit indifferent to him but quite like some of his music but thought this was a good watch.
I thought the whole character played by a monkey thing would be really off-putting but it weirdly really worked - just wondered what anyone else thought of it?

No but I recently watched the Netflix documentary series and found it quite watchable. Like you not a big fan of his music particularly, wouldn't ever think to listen to it, but made me realise how many big hits he had and how big he was. Those Knebworth gigs were nuts.

We went with the whole family a couple of weeks ago. My teenage and early twenties kids knew the name but not really the music
I took my Mrs to see him in Paris for her birthday 19 years ago. So I'm familiar with the music and know a little about the back story.
Everyone of us who watched the film, aged 19 to 61, were blown away. It was very well made and ticked all the boxes in terms of working the music into the story. Without giving away any spoilers it even turned into the Battle of the Bastards from Game of Thrones.
I think Elton John broke the music biopic mode with Rocket Man with it's fantasy scenes as opposed to the straight story telling of Bohemian Rhapsody and Robbie Williams took Elton's ball and ran with it. Highly recommended.
Although Karl Wallinger will no doubt be turning in his grave with RW using She's The One as a centerpiece of the movie.

Morning PNA, not seen the chubby dancer outta Take That's movie. But as you mentioned mumsnet was wondering what's yer View on penis beakers?
Have to be honest I'm not familiar with the phrase and slightly reluctant to google it! - perhaps you could tread the line of providing an explanation on here without getting banned?

I think the monkey thing relates to his alter ego. He did a song called Me and My Monkey which kind of explains the debauchery he got up to. Not a huge fan of his music, all a bit cheesy but this is great.

The film covered Knebworth (more around his doubts /anxiety) but the sheer scale of that was bonkers - I know he's not the only artist to have performed there but it's bloody impressive

As they used footage from the concert I could see me and my mum on the big screen!

The mummy's discussing the pros and cons of the bedside penis beaker is possibly mumsnets greatest achievement. If I remember correctly, a penis beakers is a container full of water kept on a bedside table and used for dipping in after intercourse for cleanliness and hygiene
There so much to learn on mumsnet

Nice, I will try and watch it. The documentary was really well done, using a lot of footage and behind the scenes bits from the time alongside his recollections now. The anxiety really came out in the doc, especially those 3 gigs in Leeds where he basically had a breakdown on stage. His motivations to be better than Gary Barlow and that rivalry stuff was quite interesting, and his move to LA etc and private life. Only 4 parts to it but I enjoyed it.
I would've loved to have been at Knebworth for Oasis but it was a bit before my time, I was only 9.

I went, thought it was quite brilliant.
Not a Robbie fan, either. He’s always managed to grind my gears, but this film made sense as to why he is the character he is.
I think that's spot on - does explain quite a lot about some of his demons (and perhaps a wider consideration of how people who are thrust into fame early or suddenly have to adjust cope - regardless of whether they want it or - it must be mind-blowing really)

A salutary warning for young kids desperate to be famous for whatever reason.

Thing that struck me on the doc was what a ridiculously good performer he was. Not the best singer by any stretch but the charisma and 'x factor', to sell out the venues he did etc. From a pretty humble beginning in Stoke to being one of the most famous entertainers on the planet, deserves a lot of respect for that and clearly had many mental struggles along the way.

Note thats how big he was in the UK, and possibly parts of europe, the film has literally disappeared without a trace in America and is considered an expensive flop over there as neither Robbie or Take That, despite the British press talking up their impact, have a clue who he is or who they were so aren't remotely interested in this film.

“the whole character played by a monkey thing”
The what? As in a real monkey or animation?
CGI - having seen the trailer I didn't think I'd be able to get past that but it weirdly really works.
A different actor actually does the voice of Robbie and was pretty convincing as I didn't realise that until I read a review after I'd watched the film.
