Bands you had forgotten just how good they are ... 14:25 - Jan 27 with 4571 viewsEJP

Saw the video yesterday for the latest Manic Street Preachers single, and today I've had the 3 hour Spotify curated playlist on, followed by The Holy Bible. God they're good.

Bands you had forgotten just how good they are ... on 15:26 - Jan 27 by EJP

I remember buying the "Actually" on cassette when I was visiting my sister when she lived in Lisburn, Northern Ireland in 1987 ...

When you consider the technology available at time and the cost (The Fairlight cost close to £120,000 in "today's" money), the album is a masterpiece.

I used to buy the vinyl album to then record onto a good old fashioned D60 or D90 to then have in the walkman and later on the car stereo . . . Please and Actually were great albums.

My other fave from the mid 80's was Psychocandy by the Jesus and Mary Chain, which sadly (in my uneducated opinion) was their first and best album, went downhill for them with Darklands and beyond.

The BBC did an article on the 40th anniversary of the Walkman where they gave one to a selection of kids. It took them a week before they realised you had to take the cassette out and flip it over if you wanted to listen to the other side.

I've never forgotten how good The Band were.

And now every last one of them is gone.

The same is true of the original four Ramones.

Joey died at 49, Dee Dee at 50, Johnny at 55, and Tommy at the grand old age of 65.

The lyrics of the Eagles' song James Dean spring to mind.

"too fast to live, too young to die."

I was tidying up after some twenty-somethings had stayed the weekend in a holiday home I have here. I found an empty Lloyd Cole cd box on the table. Checked the cd player and it wasn't there so assumed they'd nicked it. Week later went to put on a vinyl and found the cd on the turntable.

On the general theme of this thread, Pulp are another one as well, James also…. Seeing them in Castle Park in August (Happy Mondays and Lightning Seeds supporting).

Went to the tip yesterday and chucked at least a couple of hundred CDs. Mine and wife’s pride and joy 20 years ago. Been in a box in the garage for the last 10 years since we moved to our current house.

james are surprisingly great live, very impressed by suede last year too.

don't chuck your cds though, they'll be back (just like vinyl & tapes), everything becomes nostalgia eventually! at least give them to a charity/second hand shop

Already gone.

Saw James at the UEA around 2011, they were excellent, so looking forward to seeing them again.

George Sephton, the Anfield DJ / announcer of the last 40-odd years is something of a cult celebrity amongst Liverpool fans for the eclectic music he plays on match day.

He’s written a book and everything, it’s a decent read.

We’ve got tickets for that at Castle Park too. Also supporting are The Waeve - Graham Coxon’s band.

I saw James and Happy Mondays at Wembley Arena December 2023 and they were superb. Also saw James at Latitude a few years back, and again, very good!

As he did some backing vocals and guitar, he's perhaps entitled to the name Graham Ramone, although that doesn't sound very punky.

As regards the album Pleasant Dreams, the song "The KKK took my baby away", written by Joey, was apparently about Johnny (who was right wing) stealing Joey's girlfriend. It is said that neither spoke again after the incident.

Last time I heard that in a ground before Saturday was at Rotherham a couple of years back. I was WhatsApping a friend of mine from Sheffield at the time and he reckoned it was still number one in Rotherham.

Last year I decided to go back and listen to a lot of music that I loved when I was at uni in the mid-90s - mainly to see what I could recommend to my teenage kids.

JAMC were one of my favourite bands but I actually found Psychocandy almost unlistenable - which is odd because I loved it at the time. The only album I still liked was Honey's Dead (especially Catchfire which was always my favourite song of theirs).

Also still loved the B Sides from the I Hate Rock and Roll EP (Bleed Me and 33 1/3).

I know it's a cliche when it comes to the Mary Chain - but they are still the loudest band I have ever ever heard live. Couldn't hear properly for at least a week.

The art of mix tapes is another loss to society. Trying to find a song that was 2:41 to complete the A side so there's no unnecessary empty noise, without reusing a band already used within the last 5 -7 songs ...
