United want Delap 08:16 - Feb 8 with 4679 viewsBseaBlue

According to BBC gossip page.

I suppose the more interest the better for us ahead of the summer.

Question

PSR

In our books, lets say we're showing a £3.75 mill spend on Delap in this season accounts as you divide the amount of years his signed up for...etc

Say Man City did indeed have a £35 mill buyback, which seems low, but potentially realistic and they brought him in the summer

Would our accounts then show a £32 mill profit in next years account, rather than showing a + £20 mill which is what it would have been IF you didn't divide the original transfer fee by the number of contract years.

a niche perspective

We know delap doesn’t have a low fixed price but back, simple reason is his value is only going to increase and if it was buy back he would have gone already.

I'm not sure you've thought that logic through

City have a buy back clause of some description, there doesn't appear to be any question about that, we just don't know the particulars of it, eg. Is there a set fee already agreed with City, or is it a matching fee like Villa had with Philogene?
In a worst case scenario though, where let's say the clause stipulates a £35m buy back fee for City, which we would be obliged to accept, my understanding is that Delap is free to reject the move & go elsewhere if he chooses.
Unlike with Philogene, where ultimately it was really only a choice of us or Villa, there will be countless top sides looking to compete against each other for Delap; sides that don't have Haaland tied down to a 99 year contract as their #1 striker. So the (example) £35m clause would be irrelevant, if a few of Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Spurs & European sides got involved in a bidding war.

Well, the better for Man City...

Rommers says they have a matching clause only. He has form for knowing what's going on.

I wouldn't worry about it. Can't rule it out but I would be amazed if we agreed to a buy back clause of under £50m.

If he goes for £35m I will buy a hat and then eat it.

Truly impaired.

As you say, we just don't know the particulars.

There would be nothing stopping a situation where Man City have an option at (say) £35m, but if Delap rejects that deal and goes to a different club who offer, say, £50m, Man City get a proportion of that uplift in value, as additional consideration (a very particular kind of sell-on fee).

Also, if Man City did come in at £35m and there were other parties willing to buy at £50m or £60m, Man City may well have more firepower on wages, which in turn would make it much more likely that Delap would agree to go to Man City.

I think because of the many permutations of what this set of clauses might look like (assuming it exists), we can't really work out the likely impact of it.

The outstanding transfer balance is recorded when a player's contract ends. This is known as the player's "book value", and it's why players with zero or low "book values" are often touted for sale when a club needs more PSR wiggle room (see Mainoo and Garnacho for Man Utd).

This is naïve and full of assumptions.

How enforceable would that be if the player really didn't want to go? It isn't slavery, after all. Yes, there would likely be financial penalties, but the player or hiring club ought to be able to buy out the relevant clause.

It would be completely unenforceable if Delap wanted to go somewhere else (or indeed stay with us). But clubs as a whole are very reluctant to get involved with challenging the status quo on the transfer system, even if it works against them in individual situations, because there’s a danger of the whole house of cards collapsing, which no club wants. The major changes (Bosman, Diarra, all the way back to George Eastham) have come from individual players being prepared to go out on a limb.
