I appreciate that £600m is a heck of a lot of money, and he's probably being goaded on by the 'investors' standing behind him, but I think this chap just needs to write it off as a lost cause and a life lesson now.

Even my fairly basic A-Level law taught me that rubbish becomes the property of the council/refuse company once disposed of, so his claim was always bound to fail. I hate to think how much public time and money has been wasted by the local council having to fight his spurious legal claims.

Even if he does find them, I don't hold out much hope for the hard drives after having marinated in bin juice for goodness knows how long.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I wish I could be scammed like that.

Some very big investment banks/funds have bought Bitcoin. Not saying that definitely means it's good but there must be some sort of appeal.

I own a little (a tiny fraction of one bitcoin)

People at the top of pyramid scams do tend to do well out of them, yes.

A former colleague I sat next to invested £68,000 in BTC years ago. His sister worked for the same company and confirmed it - it was inhertiance, he put it all in BTC and she put the deposit down on a house with her share. Apparently it caused lots of issues as his family were really annoyed he'd "wasted" the money...

I'm told it's worth well north of five million now and he doesn't work any longer and his family are more forgiving.

A familiar story. But a scam according to some (who know nothing about it).

Is that your analysis over?

I do hold some DOGE coins, I must confess. Just for the fun of it.

The thing is, you could say this about loads of high-risk investments.

I'm sure some people made millions off of penny stocks, and some made millions off of playing the lottery.

I don't want to get into a back-and-forth with our new crypto-millionaire poster because I really can't be bothered, but there's very little actual utility in Bitcoin or a load of these coins. They aren't great for being used as currency, and they seem little more than betting that the line will go up right now. Lots of people have made money because the line has indeed gone up, but lots of people have also lost out when the line has gone down.

I imagine line will go up quite a bit now Trump is in as the crypto industry pumped a lot of money into the election over there so they won't have to worry about pesky regulations for a little bit longer.

AI, and more accurately AGI will bring so many more use cases to the fold. Not just BTC, but also SOL/ETH. The innovation on SOL recently has been rapid.

Buy BTC if you have any spare cash. It's still only the start!

I fail to understand how AGI even remotely relates to Bitcoin or other blockchain based projects.

Smart contracts, M2M economy, agent payment etc. They aren't going to 'work' for free.

None of us know what AI will be capable of in 5 years. ASI will arrive eventually which is another conversation. Both exciting and scary! Be part of our demise, I say.

While you've been arguing with strangers on the Internet for x years, some of us have been investing in BTC.

What a strange mentality of the people on this site - this post has 3 down votes. Surely having the foresight to invest in BTC early is something to be commended. I have 50x my money and I was late to the party in 2017. The people who call it a scam screams of jealousy, although they would never admit it.

Pretty easy to say when it wasn't your money.

£600m to secure your family for generations. Even if he promises half of it to random others and finds it, it's huge. I would be fighting for it as well.

The council are missing a trick. They should help in find it in return for £300 million. Everyone’s a winner.

My understanding is that the price of energy and how much is used to mine BTC has a minimal effect on its price.

Again, just because people have made money does not mean is not a scam. People who invested early with Madoff would have made money.

I don't think BTC is a scam (although there are plenty of actual scams in the crypto space), to me though it's little more than gambling. Good luck to anyone using it as an investment.

It's possibly more that a time when so many people are desperately struggling to survive and feed their children, lording it about a complete fluke that's landed you and others who were wealthy enough to gamble in the first place with a substantial amount of unearned wealth is maybe a little tone-deaf, but yknow, congratulations.

Quite. Nobody cares as long its turning profit. Though I do remember when crypto mining pushed the prices of GPUs up to silly money cos crypto miners were buying them all up.

Of course there are scams. Like everything these days.

If you invest in crypto always use one of the main exchanges (coin base, Kraken, binance etc). And ALWAYS keep control over your coins...on a cold storage ledger.

Don't lose your seed phrase. If only matey had his...he wouldn't need to dig up a dump!

Good luck to any fellow investors. This could be an amazing year.

I think they also made the argument, concurrent to the "it's not your property any more" argument, that the legal conditions relating to the landfill would prevent any excavation works.

I once seen a group of about 15 archaeologists lose a lump of hash on a site on a Friday afternoon. They all were in a line on their hands and knees trowling the ground like there was no tomorrow. I've never seen lads take their job so seriously. They gave up after a hour or so and any faith I had in archaeology went with it

That's a picture that's made my day, ta!

The way I have made a living was called a "scam". This kind of implies that I am therefore a scammer. I haven't ever scammed anyone. Just took exception to that (enough to create an account!) !
