Perhaps like the Syrian applicants for refugee status currently held in limbo, the hope is they will eventually return to their homeland.
Or maybe the Government hopes it will discourage people, but I can't see that happening because those coming to our shores won't have any idea about our immigration system.
Another aspect I find distasteful is the continuing use of the concept of illegality in relation to people seeking asylum, as evidenced by this passage from the guidance.
"Any person applying for citizenship from 10 February 2025, who previously entered the UK illegally will normally be refused, regardless of the time that has passed since the illegal entry took place.”
Effectively, these people will be left in perpetual limbo (with employers probably reluctant to employ them), and might not even be able to leave the country because I am not sure how easy it is to get, say, an up-to date Iraqi passport if you are, say, a Kurd.

It's not all about land area though, that's a bit of a daft way of looking at it as population size and infrastructure are also important considerations. And in 2023, France had roughly 167,000 applications to our 67,000 so they're already taking more than their fair share. |  |

I don't feel it is a daft way of looking at it.
If you're a bigger country than the other then absolutely you should be taking more than the other.
Appreciate infrastructure etc. But having the bigger county they should be expected to put together the infrastructure to cope with the numbers required in comparison to smaller counties.
Some stats online show the UK with a much smaller country than France having a population of
68.3 million to France who have 68.2 million, this despite France being twice the size.
When you drive through France. The Miles and Miles of countryside are beautiful. Here more and more of are being built on to make way for affordable homes etc and I'm some areas immigrant hoping projects.
I'm absolutely all for helping those that need it.
But do think the UK are accepting a fair number of them compared to France who imo should be housing many thousands more. | |
