We’re off to Spain this year for the Swanners Family Holiday. Catching the ferry to Santander and taking our car (a bit of a change as we were going to interail to Montenegro)
All we’ve got pencilled in so far is a week walking in the Picos de Europa, so that leaves a week to explore.
It’s not an area I’ve been to before. Has anyone got any recommendations for places that are a must-see or things to do? Ideally within 5-6 hrs drive of Santander. We like quieter towns/rural stuff to cities, although Pamplona seems intriguing.
Anyone familiar with Northern Spain? on 23:13 - Feb 14 by Steve_M
The Picos are stunning. I’ll look up some places and put them on here at some point.
I want to go back.
Bulnes is a lovely little village in the Picos, you have to walk there or can get a little train thing up(literally, they bored a tunnel) through the hills. Cangas de onis is a nice little town on the northern edge. Covadonga is worth a visit. From there you can get a bus into the mountains to some lakes. Unfortunately it was shut due to weather when we were there.
I went with a mate quite a while ago. Went to Bilbao which was nice and they have a massive modern art place there. The countryside is quite dramatic, lots of rolling hills. We got the sleeper train down to Madrid and managed to get tickets for Zidanes last ever game.
