They must be quite thick. Taking their gloves off then punch a guy in the head who's wearing a helmet.

Think in North America, fights like that are seen as part of the game. Whereas European ice hockey is more about pace and technique.

Happy to be corrected.

Its not normal by any stretch. Fights are rarer than they used to be, dont happen all that frequently.
But when they do, it might provoke some other scores to be settled too.
Its used more to try and get a team going, get some adrenaline etc.

In NHL it's not unusual for clubs to boo each other's national anthems and both are fiercely patriotic, but fights are becoming rarer and the sport is trying to distance itself.

NHL players haven't been allowed in the olympics for a decade, so lots of these players won't have pulled on a national jersey for a long time. They've introduced the 4 Nations to move back to the pro international format ahead of being allowed to compete in future games.

Fights are gladiatorial, mostly for show and to stand ground than reflective of the game itself. Probably more reflective of players getting caught up in the sentiment amongst the crowd than anything else.

It is uncommon for clubs to boo each others national anthem. There are only two nations with clubs participating. After the "51st state" state stuff booing kicked off at all the Canadian v US games. It subsequently made all of the national news channels and was all anyone was talking about at work the day after the first round of games.

I thought booing the anthem was pretty common in US vs Canadian NHL club games, but happy to be corrected. It was certainly something I thought I picked up in-stadium, but on a different scale to what was seen in the past 2 weeks no doubt!
