Finally some half decent noise from Europe 03:46 - Feb 22 with 1731 viewsKropotkin123

1. Donald Tusk says take the Russian money and finance Ukraine with it, more arial support, and a call to boost defence spending.
2. Macron calling from French defense spending to go to 5%.
3. UK rumoured to be moving to 2.5-3% defense spending (better, but not enough). But Reeves still not quite woken up yet, with some of her wishful comments. Should be 2.5% peace time and 5% war time.
4. Talk about Europe building up its industrial defence base as it can't trust the US to maintain kit that it procures from them in this time.

Talk is great of course, but they just need to agree and implement as soon as possible. This US leadership are not our friends. We have to wait at least 4 years before we maybe get someone sane in there.

Very true. But to be fair to the US tax player, why should they continue to pay more tax to help protect Europe. Same here, if the UK Gov said we're going to increase tax to fund military support in the US to help protect the US and take the burden off the US tax payers, the British public, quite rightly, would be moaning.

Trump is a dictator, and bully, but he said during his first term he wanted Europe to pay its fair share of the NATO bill, but nearly all those countries didn't. They fell asleep at the wheel as the saying goes. Trump returns, which none of them expected, throws his toys out of the pram and guess what, suddenly all these European countries are saying they will spend more.

That's the problem with a bully, once you give them what they want, they keep asking for more. Same with Canada and Mexico, tough talking about standing up to him when tariffs were announced, but they immediately did what Trump wanted.
Trump knows the US has the power and the world needs the US trading, for their own economy, even more so at the moment. Germany is heading for recession, it's was built on the German car industry, and all German car manufacturers are in decline. The Chinese market has collapsed for them, VW and all it brands will be bankrupt in 3 years if they continue to lose the money they lost in 2024, they desperately need the US market. VW, Audi closing factories, Porsche implementing redundancies. Trump sees all this as a perfect storm for his bullying.

It's going to be a crazy 4 years, if the world can recover after those 4 years it's unknown.

Trump scares he, not only is he a fruitcake but he has surrounded himself with fruitcakes.

He treats the job as a CEO rather than a president which is dangerous .

I can't comment about the Mexico and Canada situation as I am not well versed in that.......

...........but on Europe defence budget he is absolutely right.

The US has at the moment a 3.4% defence budget.look across the globe and see where Americans are stationed! Then ask yourself how much of that budget is actually going towards NATO? Yes Europe could and should do more and the Baltics Finland and Poland in particular are doing just that because they know what’s coming in the unlikely event of a Ukrainian collapse! Until we get rid of this mentality it couldn’t possibly happen to us I’m afraid nothing will change!

That first point is a good one. Particularly as facilities like Mildenhall and Ramstein are very useful to America as forward bases for their (non-NATO) operations in the Middle East. It's not as if they get nothing for their money.

The point about NATO investment isn't that straightforward at all and is very short sighted. Do you think the US have been basing themselves in Europe out of the goodness of their hearts?

The question on why America supports defence spending for Europe is answered here: https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/06/28/us-nato-alliance-madrid/

It actually supports their economy and gives them the power/strategic global influence.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Indeed. The reason they spend so much more than most of us on defence is not because they ar epulling hteir weight more than Europe specifically, but because they want to project and influence power worldwide

He is at least white and male though. So he has a chance. Unlike the general and admiral just fired, having presumably achieved their posts on merit previously...

It's hard to figure Trump out really. Does he keep saying these things to stir some nations in to doing in reality what they are supposed to do. If your neighbour wanted an extension to their house would they expect you to pay for it. We are and have been far too frivolous in allowing the UK to be open house allowing vital industries and utilities to be sold to foreign countries meaning not only do we rely on them for supply but also pay more for these things.

re point 3. In wartime conditions 5% of GDP would be insufficient. During WWII it was over 50% per annum

Sorry, you are of course correct. I was thinking this war. 5% seems appropriate alongside as many of France, Poland, Germany, Turkey and the Nordic countries doing the same.
