The difference between now and any time in the past 08:53 - Feb 23 with 2058 viewsCopfordBlue

Is that now it seems near-impossible to build a team in the championship that’s capable of holding their own in the Premier League. The pockets of the established PL clubs are now so deep that they take the players who are good enough from the relegated clubs and the rest of them get bought by the promoted clubs.

There were 3 loanees in our starting 11 yesterday. The player most likely to have made a difference (Enciso) is another one. Despite spending what for us was a huge amount of money on transfers in the summer, to add to a team who got almost 100 points the season before, much of the proven ability/experience we required needed to be borrowed from other clubs.

If we go down ,the 3 or 4 who have proven themselves to be premier league quality will leave in the summer either to become squad players for the established clubs or the big signings of the promoted teams. Even 5 years ago clubs could often hold these players for a season but that just doesn’t seem to happen anymore. Can anyone see Delap or Omari in a Town shirt if we’re back in the Championship next season?

The team we put out yesterday would beat any of the current top 6 in the Championship. Leeds, Sheffield United , Burnley or whoever comes up won’t be able to compete without changing 8 or 9 of their starting 11. As we’ve seen this league is so tough you don’t get time to develop as a team during a premier league season.

Speaking to an ardent Leeds fan. He's of the opinion they'll come straight back down.

They're certainly the test for the developers Ng of a side in the Championship, be it still with PL quality players really

In terms of personnel they were stronger last year but I know Leeds fans have been saying they're more of a team this year

They'll have the best chance of any going up

I don't see any real basket cases next season though that are going to fall away and into trouble, not now Wolves seem to have over come their issues

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

£50m of that was for two players in Odobert and Berge - see Hutchinson and Delap. A further £20m from us for Muric and O'Shea. Not sure who the equivalent is but we certainly won't be getting £8m for Palmer, Muric or Walton. Then they flogged a few players to the foreign market; I can't see that being the case for us.

The point wasn't really about who goes where, more just countering the point (not just yours, but often mentioned) that no one will want our players who have failed to keep us up.

Burnley fans probably said the same last season.

We needed 2 perfect transfer windows to give ourselves a serious chance of getting 35 points plus this season. I think you will find that this squad in the championship will be very fun to watch and be very well equipped to make a swift return (with inevitable midfield recruitment and 2/3 departures including Delap). However, the transfers haven’t been good enough to bring us to the level we need to be in now.

It is what it is, we knew that this year would be very difficult to survive and we have not been good enough. The only reason we have had a glimmer of hope this season is because Wolves’ ownership have cheaped out for the last 3 years.

Still a lot to be positive about moving forward, but this is the 4th wealthiest league in world sport. What we’ve spent on players is a mere drop in the ocean compared to the rest. Just a step too far, no disgrace in accepting that situation.

Completely agree. Just to add that Wolves cheaping out still involved spending £125 million this transfer year, £40million plus on one player the season before and £180 million the season before that one!! And that doesn't contradict you at all, that is cheaping out basically!!
It's a complete different universe to us and all but about 17 teams in the entire of English football.

I think this is where some of our fans need to readjust their thinking. Yes, we've spent £120m this window and that's a lot of money, and yes that is one of the highest net spends in the league. But our total squad cost is probably about £130m overall, given that half the squad was recruited in the Championship and League 1. Compare that to other squads at this level and it's a relative pittance. We think £20m is huge money, and it is really, but by Prem standards it's really not that much to be spending on a player.

And yet, understandably to a certain extent, that £15/20 million player for us has huge expectations and huge scape-goatery potential. Brentford, fecking little old Brentford, have spent £10 million plus on 4 or 5 players for each of the last 5 seasons, spent £25 million+ 5 or 6 times. Every premier league club, probably bar the new boys spend £10 million or so and it barely registers, yet it's been used as a massive stick to beat muric with when we pay £8m. Understandable, but not entirely up with the reality of the premier league.
