Phillips 09:12 - Feb 27 with 2826 viewstractorboy1978

I don't like digging players out but that signing really has been a big issue for us IMO. He just hasn't got going at all due to a combination of injuries and form has he? As soon as he looks like he is getting back towards his level, he seems to have a set back. We can't rely on him and we've been left short.

I am not blaming him personally but there is no way it has worked out anywhere near close to as we would have wanted/assumed it would. He must have been signed as the main man and the CM to hang our hat on for a minimum of 7/10 every week. The man to have a 'Barkley' effect and provide the sort of quality we had no hope of signing permanently elsewhere.

Conversely, I thought we missed him a lot last night.

I think his form has been fine, his fitness has been the problem.

If he didnt have fitness issues, he probably wouldnt have joined us.

I think thats kind of the point though isn't it? For one reason or another, we have not been able to rely on him at all. Hasn't helped either that Cajuste has spent most of the season unfit.

His last couple of games were his best for us, and we really could have done with him last night. Keeping him injury free seems to be the issue.

Spot on. We have had nowhere near enough from our main summer signing, for a variety of reasons.

I still think Phillips & Cajuste is the best central midfield partnership we could've had this season had circumstances allowed. Sadly we've only seen it 3 times. Once being one of our better performances away at Brentford and another being one of our better performances away at Villa.

Missed him alot last night, would have had an increased chance with him instead of Morsy.

A shadow of the player he once was, poor signing.

Yes, that is the nail on the head really. I said in the summer there is no way we intend to have Morsy as our main man this season but he's ended up playing nearly twice as many minutes as Phillips and 700 minutes more than Cajuste. Keep those two fit to play 90 minutes week in, week out and I'm pretty sure our season looks a lot different.

Been such a shame. No disrespect to Morsy & Taylor but they wouldn't get close to any other side in this division, including those that will go down with us. We've got 30 odd time England & Sweden capped Phillips & Cajuste on loan from Man City and Napoli respectively, and we've not got them in there together anywhere near enough. That's largely been circumstantial and Phillips clearly isn't the same player he was a few years back, but its been a big issue.

On the contrary.

He has (FINALLY) got going.

But now he’s missing more games through injury / suspension. That’s the story.

I thought he'd got going earlier in the season then he got sent off vs Leicester and we only saw him for more than 30 mins twice in 11 games. Now he's going to miss at least 3 games again and will probably take a couple of more to get going than that.

People replying to this with 'missed him tonight' 'he's looked good the past 2 games'.. the signing has been an absolute car crash. He's been missing for half the season leaving us way short on quality in midfield, would've cost us an obscene amount of money for every week he's been sat in the stands or on the bench, all 3 of our wins have been when he hasnt been playing.

Also obviously wont be here next season and hasnt contributed anything to games we've won, really wouldnt of made any difference if he was here or not.

Plenty of other MF in the Prem that we could have signed in the summer for cheaper and better. Moder and Groß at Brighton for example. The wages we were paying for Phillips we could have wooed one or both of them to come either perm or on loan seeing they were surplus to requirements at Brighton by then.

Phillips possibly the highest wage earner at Town but has not lived up to even my lowest expectations. Its already more than 2/3 of a season in but still not up to speed, and not adding any value and bite to the midfield. If his heart is at Leeds I'd gladly send him there, what a waste of space.

No wonder you get so hot under the collar about our transfer approach when you think Pascal Groß would have been a realistic target.

One's been one of the most influential players for an established Premier League side for a number of seasons and left to play for a Bundesliga giant, and the other's a fading star who had barely played for 2 years and who'd come off the back of a pretty disastrous loan at a middling Prem club.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

£150,000 a week apparently of which we are probably paying half. We moan like hell about paying £20 million for some of the new recruits, but when you consider Phillips cost City around £50 million and Grealish cost them £100 million and he can't get a regular game. In all honesty the Premier League and top clubs from Spain, Italy etc pay monopoly money both in transfer fees and wages. When young people can't get on the housing ladder because the average house price is £299,000 but these professionals are getting more than that in some cases per week it is utter madness.
