| He’s talking about you, Liam on 11:32 - Oct 30 by MrPotatoHead | I agree. I think he knew from pretty early on he was going to leave if he could maintain the form he was showing. I did sense he was playing for the name on the back rather than the badge on the front at times, especially when it was quite obvious we weren't staying up. |
Are we maybe all over thinking this? Is he simply a big old unit who plays by bashing into people and using his pace, as well as having a great shot and knowing where the goal is. And that's a chunk of great attributes, and makes him hugely valuable. Is he also, without being disrespectful, limited in his football brain for better or worse. He's been the same way for a while now, he hasn't shown signs of changing. Maybe it's not even on his radar about playing for himself or for the badge, maybe he just plays full stop and it either happens or doesn't. Maresca eluded to it not so subtly, didn't he? You get what you get and it includes him being a petulant over the top twit a chunk of the time.

| He’s talking about you, Liam on 11:25 - Oct 30 by SamWhiteUK | You need a striker to be a bit selfish but I think he almost started the season too well, which sounds nonsense admittedly but I think he enjoyed being the surprise main man, the wildcard in the league that everyone was looking at, and he started a) trying to be the hero too much and b) playing for his next career move, trying to pad his own numbers. |
I agree with the first bit (as I said at the time, below), but not the “pad his own numbers” thing. I think he was just full of confidence and enthusiasm. He’s talking about you, Liam by Chris_ITFC 27 Feb 2025 16:25Everything he touched turned to gold at the start of the season.
So he’s still trying those things… just without the unsustainable levels of gold.
That can definitely look selfish / greedy, but it comes from a good place. Unfortunately, that enthusiasm also spills over into ill-discipline (still).

| He’s talking about you, Liam on 11:05 - Oct 30 by GlasgowBlue | Without his selfishness we'd have probably finished with less points than Southampton last season. |
Indeed, but he needs to learn that he doesn't have to be selfish in this Chelsea team.

| He’s talking about you, Liam on 10:45 - Oct 30 by MrPotatoHead | 'Plays the game for himself' is true. I said last season to a friend of mine that he's quite a selfish player and I stand by that. Its not necessarily a bad thing if its used in the right way but often he doesn't. |
One of his best games last season was away at Bournemouth when he played like a proper target man and meshed well with Enciso and Broady. What he really needed was a year out of the spotlight ( relatively,) working with KM to really hone those skills and attributes. Would be fantastic if Maresco thought the same and him back here to finishing school

I kinda felt this after the chelsea game, i don't feel we got the best of delap after that fixture. Almost like he'd got himself in the show window that game and got the go ahead afterwards.

Think you're being harsh there, never really let us down. Plus I give him kudos for being at the Scum match, he didn't need to be but choose to.

| He’s talking about you, Liam on 11:15 - Oct 30 by MrPotatoHead | You might well be right, he was a beast and often the standout player in all of our better results and performances. As I say its not always a bad thing and you wouldn't want to train that out of him completely as his fearless aggression is what makes him so dangerous. I think one thing he needs to learn is to get that balance right, especially now with better quality players around him. |
Completely agree. My Chelsea mate asked me about him when he signed and I said to him that he could be quite Drogba-like in his aggression but too often he's naive, and he probably avoided a few yellows and reds for us that he won't keep avoiding through his career. Morsy's a good example of someone who learned to control his aggression. Plays right on the edge but knows when to pull it back and behave - as shown when he sat right on the cusp of a ban for about ten games when we needed it most.

Might become a real issue in his progression. If he can channel it it could be an amazing asset, but without the focus it becomes a burden and a problem. |
