Looks like US funding for mRNA vaccine research could be cut 08:06 - Mar 28 with 1285 viewsStokieBlue

mRNA is a powerful new tool for the quick creation of vaccines that essentially allows scientist to "program" an immune response in the body to fight off viruses. It was hugely effective against Covid and is currently being used in research into vaccines against H5N1.

It also has the added benefit of creating multiple immune responses from a single vaccine so you can have one vaccine that covers covid, flu, measles etc. It's also showing promising signs with regards to a universal flu vaccine.

It looks like that for ideological reasons that government funding into this research in the US could be cut. One grant has been cut already [1] and there is currently a team looking at the other funding [2].

This is being lead by the NIH and it's expected that Bhattacharya will be made the new director of that organisation. He was one of the three authors of the "Great Barrington Declaration".

"So far, any attempt at reasoning with people has fallen on deaf ears. Everything is being run by the department [Department of Health and Human Services] or the White House,” the person said. KFF Health News separately reported that all grants involving mRNA research were to be reported to Memoli, for referral to the office of the health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, and the White House."

Private companies are likely to continue investment and research but it's not ideal for government funding to be cut when this is the most promising technology we have available for future vaccine creation.

There's a painful irony to that, given what a lot of a certain type of voter believe.

Clearly bad news but what's been concerning me recently is that Trump is considering putting a 25% tariff on pharmaceuticals which would do nasty things to the NHS.

Strikes me as an opportunity for China to step up and start producing pharmaceuticals. I'd love to see that happen actually. Trump's greed backfiring in his fat orange face would be funny.

Things like this are going to make the US a much less attractive place for the sort of high calibre overseas students who have contributed to US advances in sciences and the like.

I think this is something that Macron has already picked up on.

But tariffs would only apply to imports to the US. How would that affect the NHS, they presumably aren’t exporting pharma for sale in the States?

Unless I’ve missed something…

I'm not saying this has been suggested but technically he could put an export duty on

On a related theme and by comparison with the US, this is what I posted a couple of weeks ago,

Maybe it depends on the sector/organisation but I heard the other day that the NHS pays much less for drugs than is the case in the States because of the NHS's buying power.

This article confirms it.

https://lowdownnhs.info/explainers/billions-are-spent-by-the-nhs-on-drugs-every-

"And this [negotiated discounts] is often the way – the powerful position the NHS sits in as the provider of almost 100% of healthcare in the UK, means such deals can be struck. Such confidential deals are not the only way prices are controlled in the UK, however the powerful negotiating position of the NHS is a major factor that enables NHS patients, in the main, to receive the drugs they need for treatment and for the the cost of drugs to not spiral out of control."

"It is not easy to compare drug prices across markets due to the complicated nature of rebates and discounts that operate, that are often confidential. It is however clear that drug prices in the UK are much lower than in several other developed markets and substantially lower than in the USA."

Well, it is a tariff but I get your point about stressing about things that haven't happened.

I did post previously that Trump is a disruptor and we should wait and see what gets done rather than what might get done.

I find the whole Trump thing quite crazy but ironically it is exasperated by fake news.

I spend a lot of time wondering if USA as a people have a way of ousting him (even though I'm not sure that the fecking cretins want to) but at the same time praying he stays alive as his deputy is clearly insane.
