Barnsley (A) 1995-96 11:44 - Apr 13 with 1513 viewsThe_Major

Was looking through the social media this morning, and there's several bits of footage from the Accrington v Tranmere match from yesterday - Tranmere three down up to the 78th minute, and then score in the 78th, 87th, and 101st to make it 3-3.

Which got me thinking about a trip to Oakwell in March 1996.Town three down up to the 85th minute, goals coming in the 85th, 88th, and 90th minute to also make it 3-3. Seeing the Tranmere fans go absolutely berserk just made me wonder how nuts the Town support went that day when the equaliser went in.

And also, does that count as the greatest comeback we've ever had in a match? I can't think of any others where we've been three down and got something out of it, and definitely not if we're four down.

The greatest ever comeback was when Coronation Street United were 4-0 down to Emmerdale Town, in 1997/98. Sheila Mercier, (2) Frazer Hines and Frederick Pine had given Emmerdale Town a 4-0 lead, which lasted incredibly until the 88th minute. Then a complete turnaround occurred after Stan Richards received a second yellow. Goals from Knox, Goodyear, and Alexander made it 4-3, but remarkably there was more drama to follow. In the 98th minute, after a lengthy injury to Youens, a corner was swung over from the left, Roache flicked the ball on, and there was Johnny Briggs on hand to nod the ball in from close range. This sparked some serious limbs down Rosamond Street.

It was there. Was at uni in Manchester and had gotten the train across the Pennines. Since then I have never understood how fans can leave a game early. I loved Marshall as a player!

A last minute winner against Oxford scored by, of all people, Glenn Pennyfather taught me that lesson.

It was (thankfully) the first time I managed to stop my late dad from leaving early to 'beat the traffic'. That decision really paid dividends. He continued to leave before the end when on his own but never again with me.
What a day.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

The quality of Tranmere’s goals, though. Facking hell. Absolute belters.

Not sure it was the greatest.

We were 0-3 down at HT vs Bradford at The Odsall Stadium the season after the Valley Parade fire.

Town won 4-3 and I think Brennan got a hat-trick.

Never been able to find footage of it, but can't find any. Apart from one that only shows the Barnsley goals!

Was the first game I took my (now ex) husband to - and he still never went to another one after that!

You might be getting your 1986/87 4-3 away wins slightly mixed up. Town were 3-2 down at half time against Bradford, only for Nigel Gleghorn’s hat-trick to help us to the win.

A month earlier Town won 4-3 at West Brom having trailed 2-0 and 3-1. John Deehan scored a hat trick and Kevin Wilson got the winner. Steve Bull scored twice for Albion shortly before he moved to Wolves.

Listened to it on the radio and went loco when Marshall equalised. Still think the comeback win against Sheff United shades it though, can vividly recall Bents winning header and the chaos that ensued in the North. TWTD.

We were on the end of Oxford's comeback in 1985/86.

Town were 3-0 up but somehow went on to lose 4 - 3. At the end of the season we were relegated when Oxford beat Arsenal 3-0 in a game that was played after our final game, something that would never happen. In a nutshell blowing that lead got us relegated.

There are a lot of variables in a season. We beat Oxford 3-2 home when one goal was a blatant foul on the keeper and a last minute free-kick went in via two or three deflections. Relegation was inevitable at some point, the good players were all sold to build a stand.
