Points gained every 2.5 games... (13 from 32) 07:43 - Apr 15 with 1931 viewsRIPbobby

We have taken points from 13 of 32 games which is 1 point per 2.5 games. Wolves have taken points in 15 games and spurs have in 16 games. The blatant difference is they have taken many wins and we have taken many draws. Food for thought.

At times we have done well. Is our problem the lack of quality on the bench? Injuries? Or the actual fact that we often did like for like replacements? I'm certain Sunday is the first time we have done a tactical sub to try and hold our lead. KM in his time here would almost always never take off LD at left back. Perhaps it might have been prudent to bring on Taylor instead of billy jean. Taylor is so competitive and that's what we need in the closing stages. Hindsight is so beautiful.

The main issue is it's impossible to build a midtable Prem squad in one transfer window after back to back promotions. Wolves have been our target in 17th and they've got a squad packed full of internationals. There are no obvious relegation contenders amongst the 17 who have been in the Prem for at least 3 years anymore, they've all strengthened to a point where their minimum aspiration is midtable. The gap in quality has been compounded with us having one of the worst injury records in the league, we've been missing players in key positions far too often and have then also not had the quality on the bench to change or see games out as a result. If we'd had a good season injury wise I reckon we'd be closer to Wolves but we'd still be relegated.

Tuanzebe's thumb excepted (and I think that was a very significant absence), perhaps we've just been overstressing players in a much faster, more athletic game?

Maybe people were right in saying we should have got more Prem experience (for the physical prowess), but would we have been able to get that with sufficient quality and freedom from injury with the money available? Look at Phillips - quality Prem player when at his peak. But we were only able to get him trying to rebuild his confidence and somewhat fragile.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Even Phillips, who has been at this level for years, has struggled to stay fit. Some of the injuries could be overworking the players with the jump in quality but you look at some of the others, Burns and Philogene both injured in tackles, Ogbene's Achilles just snapping, Hirst and Broadhead out for ages with injuries sustained very early in preseason. I'm not sure those injuries could be put down to trying to bridge the physical gap necessarily. When you factor in how much time Chaplin and Szmodics have also missed, Hutch and Enciso both missing several games each at times too. It's really been quite something.

My point about Phillips being that he was not a tip-top Prem player, instead one struggling with injuries and confidence. However, that was the best we could afford/attract - as opposed to ambitious, upwardly mobile Champ men more prepared to take a chance to get a foot in the Prem.

Pretty sure that's why Philogene went to Villa in the summer. Thought it was a more secure lodgement in the division, but was unable to break into the team and effectively got released by Emery.

Most of those injuries could have been contributed to, at least, by working harder in training or on the pitch. Even just the extra effort they've had to put in, the harder tackles while trying to be more agile on the ball.

I posted this in another thread about dropped points ...

We have not been good enough thats for sure but the " points dropped" is as encouraging as it is disappointing in my view. Lets not forget that everyone of those points dropped we actually retain then opposition teams are being deprived of at least 2 points they currently have! .... anyway realistically next year was probably the promotion target year for the owners do weve really just had a financially beneficial bonus year in the Premier League!

One statistic that stands out is the difference between our home and away points. We've got as many away points as the other 2 soontoberelegated teams combined and only 4 or fewer than 6 others. On average about 54%of points gained in the PL are gained at home, for SKMc's team it's just 33.33333%. Only 2 others have fewer than half their points from home games, then by only a few percent.
One home win and eleven home defeats (currently 6 consecutive) is historically bad.
Why are SKMc's results so cr@p at home but almost competitive away?

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home.

I can't back this up with any kind of tactical explanation, but it feels to me like we've just tried to continue playing at home like we have for two years prior. Play to entertain and score goals, and the intention is always there to be fair. We have spells of dominating the ball and we create a lot of half chances.

McKenna once said he wants Portman Road to be the place to watch football in this country, and last season it was. Can't knock him for ambition!

Away from home, like on Sunday, we're happy having none of the ball and we'll happily play scrappy, how we did a lot away from home last season actually. You have to wonder what would've happened if we'd scrapped for points more at home, I'm confident we could have turned some defeats into draws and a couple of draws into defeats.

I think that has been an issue in some games but when we've set up more cautiously at home we've still tended to lose - Bournemouth, Brighton, Wolves. Chelsea is the only real exception.

The problem is, that we're not actually very good at scrapping for points.... we don't defend well enough. 2 clean sheets all season. and the loss of winning positions shows how hard we find it to stop people scoring. We need to try and score, because we can't do a boring 0-0.

When he said he wants Portman Road to be the place to watch football little did we know that he meant for PL away fans, except Chelsea of course.

We tried very hard to play scrappy dig in football at the weekend.... sat in, with no ball, but as previously mentioned, we're just not very good at it.... We were cut open way too easily, and then found it impossible to get up the pitch.
