I know the future of humanity is on the line etc etc 15:29 - Apr 29 with 2510 viewsLinners

...but the White House press conferences/briefings are pure comedy gold. There's no way that political satires would have gone this far - they'd have been accused of being ridiculous.

I think my favourite is the props. They love a prop.

I really doubt one quote is going to "move mainstream politics closer to the Reform agenda". To suggest it's not a way for a serious party to behave is just ridiculously OTT IMO. We have a lot of right wing people in this country, unfortunately. It makes perfect sense to throw them some crumbs occassionally. By not addressing their concerns is how Reform gets in, actually.

Those right wing people despise Labour. Rather than stealing Reform votes, shifting to the right not only makes Labour looks like hypocrites, it galvanises the right still further. "Even two tier Kier wants to stop the boats now, or so he says. Bloody hypocrite. It's woke lawyers like him who let them in in the first place. Never trust Labour. Vote Reform. Stop the boats."

We need to counter the narrative set by reform, not join in with it.

Did you not see all the blue seats turning red at the general election? Lots of people who weren't Labour voters voted for them then.

The people you describe with your made up quote are going to vote Reform anyway, this message isn't going to sway them either way.

I think you're reading way too much into one statement.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Did you see that Labour received 1 million fewer votes at the last election? They won because the Tories were awful, and Reform split the right wing vote. Do you honestly think anybody voted Labour based on their immigration policies? Not even Labour know what they are.

People who's motivation to vote is centred on reducing immigration will not vote Labour. Labour win no additional votes with this rhetoric, all they do is normalise hostility to refugees and push the needle further to the right, exactly where Reform want it to be.

What is this needle?
What is this hostility to refugees (from Labour)? It's just "no sex offenders", they haven't said anything else.
You've said yourself people aren't going to vote Labour based on their immigration policies anyway, so what actual difference is this comment really going to make, one way or the other?

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. You're trying to make one comment into "rhetoric" and "normalising hostility". It's just nonsense.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Announcing that you will ban sex offenders from seeking asylum on the eve of local elections is a thinly veiled attempt to look tough on 'illegal' immigration. Most newspapers will have a headline including the words sex offenders seeking asylum, adding the the increasingly normalised misconception that large swathes of those seeking asylum are criminals. Call it nonsense all you like, but it's the truth. Just wait for the local election results.

They've also said they'll bar people who come to the UK via small boats from being given citizenship. They know this probably isn't legal but it's the same anti-immigrant rhetoric as the Tories and Reform basically. If nobody is going to vote for Labour because they are tough on immigration, why bother stoking anti-immigrant sentiment? Why not provide an alternative narrative rather than parroting stuff that would sit well in the Mail?

It’s Florida though. They’re as mad as a bag of spanner’s down there. It’s basically Clacton with crocodiles.

It’s amazing how many people genuinely believe whatever Trump says. How they manage to seamlessly pivot around his inconsistency is quite impressive.

You lot can be pretty lazy and ignorant about America sometimes.

Florida has Democratic mayors, Jacksonville and Tampa for example. The pan handle is completely different to the Gulf and Southeast as well. At the moment a solid red state but there many Democrat counties in FL and in fact is was very often considered a swing state historically until the Dems went pretty left. What has tipped it solid Republican is the Latino support of Trump, especially in Miami.

The REAL deep red is above FL and the Mountain West.

Anywhere with huge metro centers will have plenty of Democrats.

So Florida is a republican state, just as Clacton is a Reform constituency? I'm pretty sure not everyone in Clacton voted for Farage.

Yes it's a red state but it also has 24M people, so it's obviously a lazy comment as I have outlined above.

Not really, just shows how many ignorant or xenophobic people live in both places.

I think people struggle with the scale of the US. Even in some of the more backwards bits where there are large cities they still tend to lean Democrat, not exclusively of course, but there aren't many states that are ALL red with no blue.

This is nothing left to add other than I mentioned above. I just find it interesting that everyone always mentions FL as the most mental republican state when it's been a swing state previously and has many millions of Democrats living down there.

Also has a younger population post the pandemic (when everyone wanted out of the city's that had crazy restrictions for years). So if the Dem's got their act together they may be able to target it in the future again, albeit a long shot at the moment.

Some similarities with TX that have large democratic metros and mayors.

The REAL Republican stronghold are the likes of WY, ND, KY, AL, MS, ID, WV, AR, TN

Although most of the US map in terms of counties is currently Red (just not population).
