Horticulturistas - recommed me a tree/bush that will last but won't get too big 10:59 - May 1 with 383 views | The_Flashing_Smile | As a family we've been struggling to know what to do with Dad's ashes. Mum doesn't want them in the house, jewelery with them in seems a bit weird, and he didn't really have a 'special place' where we could scatter them. Other than his vegetable patch, but then my mum is 80... she won't live there forever. So we're thinking of mixing the ashes into the soil of some kind of tree/bush that can be in a large pot, but won't get too big that it'll need planting in the ground, so we can move it easily when the time comes. Any ideas?

Has anyone other than Mr Miyagi ever successfully kept a bonsai tree alive for more than a couple of months?

He died the day we played Man City and Gary Croft wore his ankle tag, so was a long time back!

I was thinking something a little bigger than that! Don't know how much there is in the way of ashes but if it's anything like in the movies they'll swamp a bonsai tree!

I've one in a large pot that is about 20 years old. You'll have to use Ericaceous compost, And make sure it is blocked from the rising sun, but its a wonderful plant.

Couple of things to think about... Are you thinking of a pot or in the garden?( edit, didn't read thie OP properly - pot is fine, but bear in mind the below) Obvious benefits of a pot menas it can move if you move. Downside, is that you will have to be a bit more careful of it, as pots need to be maintained to ensure they don't dry out. I've succesfully kept a couple of camellias alive in pots, but I live in Manchester where we are less likely to suffer drought conditions and have to water regularly. We have just planted an Acer ( japanese maple), in our garden as a remembrance of my father in law. Slow growing, and not too big, but looks lovely, so that would be another option. - but you could also do it in a pot. YOU also might find azaleas better than camellias as they don't tend to grow as big.... [Post edited 1 May 12:10]

Would echo the Japanese Acer. Can get dwarf varieties. They look spectacular especially in the autumn
