I did volunteer to be shut in a solitary confinement/bad boy cell. Wasn’t nice. There was nothing in it bar a hole in the floor. No bed, light or anything else. It was all about sensory deprivation. The inmate was stripped and bunged in. Food went in and out through a cat flap and every so often the guard would poke a hose through and blast the bloke with cold water.
As far as the bay is concerned, yes the water is pretty cold but we were told the real killer was the currents. Your chances of surviving them were practically zero and tbf, when you are standing on Alcatraz, SF looks a heck of a long way away. Despite the film, escapees and myth, I seriously doubt anyone survived trying to swim it. |

when i visited alcatraz we were given ear phones and recorders , which explained everything about the prison plus background noises of doors slamming shut and guards and inmates shouting. not sure if i remember correctly though there was graffiti on the outside walls from some native indians who took over the island in protest over something. i may have dreamt that last bit |  |

I assume you started from the ferry as I believe you are not allowed to go from the island itself. That's a good swim with the the ocean currents ( and sharks ) flowing through the Golden Gate bridge. Well done. |  | | |

Honestly, it wasn't so bad, but that's rather the point, the day I did it the currents were very kind, it took less than an hour and I've had (much) harder swims in the UK.
Imaging how escapees wouldn't know what the tides would do, much less do it during daylight, much less not having a wetsuit on....eesh | | | |

That’s one heck of an achievement. According to the internet, it’s 1.25 miles from land. It looked further than that to me! I used to be a decent swimmer, but I wouldn’t have fancied that, wetsuit or otherwise.
