At face value, setting fire to a pile of money would be a better investment than owning a football club. There must be accounting/tax/offsetting behind the scenes at most clubs, surely? Otherwise the math doesn’t math. (Except for players and agents, of course)

I genuinely think Robbie Cowling never saw it as an investment, but more as an (expensive) 'hobby'. I think quite a few of the lower league owners are like this. (His pal at Peterborough, for example.) Having said that, having put so much money into the academy, he will no doubt have been disappointed that he never sold a player for anything like the near 2 million that Brentford paid Exeter for Ollie Watkins. (About 700,000 is about as much as Colchester ever get for a player, and the hoped-for cut from subsequent transfers has never amounted to much. |  | | |

No, I don't think so. I think the son is also called Bill (SERIOUSLY wealthy), and has nothing to do with New York.
Colchester fans are currently making their own frantic attempts at 'due diligence' and getting not very far at all. Trepidation seems to be the over-riding emotion, from what I can see online and from conversation in the local boozer.
The club's principal asset as it stands is the training ground in Tiptree. The government seems increasingly willing to let developers build on urban green spaces, and what little that seems to be known about Mr Foley is that he is a property developer. Robbie Cowling always maintained that he bought that land as a kind of tribute to his mother (which is why the ground is called Florence Park), but whether he retains that sentiment or just wants some of his money back remains to be seen.
Also some rumblings that Barnsley are after the Cowleys, so these are worrying times for Colchester supporters. (Even with Americans on the way in, I can't bring myself to talk about the 'fan base'.) | | | |

I can't see Barnsley being interested in Danny Cowley, I think Col are pretty safe with that.

True enough, but I'm one of those who thinks the 'degree of stability' should be applauded, with the likes of Southend, Oldham, Scunthorpe (all much bigger clubs than Colchester) in mind. Only time will tell if someone else can build on this. | | | |
