Any old boys agree? 23:44 - May 10 with 1048 viewsMVBlue

Wolves V Brighton 2 British players in the whole line up, Adam Webster and Danny Welbeck.
Wolves not a single British player. Both managers overseas nationality.
What is the identity of these clubs? We at Ipswich actually try to field our own talent historically.
Are we happy now we are the global game, that entire fielded teams can be without a Brit (let alone an Englishman)?
Answers on a postcard..

Its a crazy world now. 20 years ago this was a big deal. I'm proud of us and our Brits mixed with international talent. Man U, Liverpool, Villa tend to mix Brits with International too.

Poll: Whats the best league to watch outside of England?

It's an international league that happens to be based in the uk. I'd like to see a limit of 5 foreigners and I think that would start to even things up again regarding the bottom three.

For those of you who are as old as me you will remember there was a limit of two foreigners in any team in the 80's, then it started to creep up to what it is today.
Yes I think there should be a limit, maybe 5 or 6 but no more.

Liverpool won the double in 86 with a team with no starting English player. A team of Scots, Welsh, Irish plus a Dane, Aussie and Zimbabwean.

Am I happy with the Premier league attracting the best talent in the world? I am, but can see the argument for insisting starting line ups have a minimum 2 English starters. It would help the development of English players and hopefully improve the national side.

But if you are hankering back to a bygone age of limited foreign players then that ship sailed decades ago. We all like to look back with a bit of nostalgia but tbh the standard of football is far higher now largely due to the influx of foreign talent.

And our greatest ever line up would surely include a couple of Dutchmen who brought joy and wonder to our game. Had we not been limited to playing just 2 foreigners then Ruud Guillet may have graced Portman Rd too. Struggling to see any of that as bad.

Poll: This new lockdown poll - what you reckon?

Like it or not, the Premier League is an international league which attracts top players from all over the world. I can easily understand the romance of harking back to the days when most of Division One was indeed British but that chain of thought is irrelevant.

A cap on overseas players is nonsensical- why would the PL want to limit itself in terms of recruiting talent when other European Leagues benefit from freedom of movement? It’ll be imposing some sort of sanction upon itself which is ridiculous.

It’ll help the national team - the top division of the 70s, 80s, and early 90s were largely made-up of UK players. Blimey, England must have really dominated the international scene…no. Englands greatest modern success has been relatively recently when Southgate was criticised for not winning a major tournament. What did England do in the 70s and 80s?

Plus I don’t understand the British aspect of this. English yes, but a Scot or Welshman etc is the same as a German or Norwegian. If you can’t play for England then you’re foreign.

As an aside, are there any clubs outside the bottom 6 in the league who sing "He's one of our own"?

I think even 20 years ago a lot of premier league clubs were doing it, it's just with the money and global reach now, that the 'smaller' teams in the prem can buy teams full of Brazilian internationals etc. for 10s of millions. They're not just buying George Weah's cousin or aging stars and complete punts.

Honestly though if you've got all the top clubs fielding 10 overseas players in a team and e on the bench, can we really see our International team having a wide choice? I think this may rear its head very soon. I mean we have 2 of the England U21s front three and were looking at McAtee too!
While I support our method of buying the best Championship players we do need a few more overseas players. Looking at Phillips VS Cajuste I think we can see which one worked out best.

From a recruitment perspective there is much better value to be found abroad, with the caveat that you need to invest in the scouring and data infrastructure first. For some reason it has become accepted that one good season in the Championship means you are worth 10-15m, maybe even 20m, so why wouldn't you try to find cheaper options elsewhere?

I watched the extended highlights of us beating spurs 3-0 at home in 2001 the other day. The football was absolutely awful. The premier league is 100 times better now. I love seeing one of our own come through and it's harder now and that sucks but on the flip side, when they make it now you know they're there on merit.

Poll: Which would you accept?
