If you are thinking of water borne diseases like cholera, it was John Snow that discovered the link in the 1850s after mapping cases around a water pump in Soho. Before that, diseases like cholera were thought to be air borne (miasma).

The answer to that should have been fairly easy, given that it reduced the severity of symptoms and it’s also estimated the vaccines prevented about 14 million deaths in their first year alone. There are some issues of course (as there are with any medical intervention). It’s a shame that the environment of paranoia promoted by the anti-vaxxers and the understandable push back to that pretty much cut dead any chance of a sensible discussion around risk. There will be a lot of data now around any adverse effects though, so I expect the levels of risk are known if not necessarily communicated well. Has anyone kept them up. I stopped after the second as I assume my age group dropped out of the priority list.

Most vaccines will have have a degree of varying effectiveness in terms of disease prevention(flu, for example is around 50-60% effective), what they will ALL do is train your immune system to fight said disease(and without complications) without you having to contract the disease and suffer the symptoms(and potential hospital admissions, death or long term complications). People in Jenner's day had can be forgiven their ignorance given that immunology was an unknown branch of medicine at that point, they don't have that excuse today day.

I'm not sure about the ethics of it all. Clearly he was right and so it was a brilliant thing to do. Had he been completely wrong it would have been roundly condemned wouldn't it? I also can't imagine how long they had to make the poor lad stand with that needle in his arm in order to take that photograph!

Hardly a photograph in 1796 ! Edward Jenner's house is now a museum and is pretty much next door to Berkeley Castle, so it makes for a decent day out. Off the M5 in Gloucestershire.
