Worried by the state of the UK, this board 20:27 - May 16 with 4669 viewsthebooks

When I see posts like:

“None of the parties have the balls to stop the boats or deport those that have arrived illegally, even those that have been caught raping, robbing and wanting an easy life provided by us tax payers.”

I worry. This is how fascism spreads. It’s normalised through stuff like this that just passes by with a couple of down votes. We get used to it.

'Fastesr growing economy in G7' - youll never sing that...

It's a fair point but going to have to respectfully disagree. If continuing austerity, being serial liars, arming Israel and supporting a genocide, pinballing all over the place purely for optics, echoing Enoch Powell, getting into bed with BlackRock (BLACKROCK!!) isn't embarrassing and shameful then what is?

You're right about the different high streets and places. That's a huge part of the problem and why Reform will win. Because we're very divided. It's like Ipswich V Bury here

The Tories are dead imo. Things have shifted. Farage has more political skill in his little finger than the rest of them put together. He will be PM.

Very true, so yes he's an embarrassment by labour standards, but in the context of all the other PMs we've had, no more so and certainly less than Farage

I actually preferred Boris - less of a liar than Starmer! And at least he stood for something even if that was himself...Sunak seemed more decent too!

That's clearly nonsense.

Boris lied almost every time he constructed a sentence. How quickly people seem to have forgotten the Covid parties at Downing Street for instance.

If you did a tally of lies, Starmer would be streets ahead. Look up his Labour leadership pledges...

I was being partly tongue in cheek, but there's no doubt Starmer is the more disingenuous politician. I think Boris has some political principles - even if they are Tory. Starmer has none. Only ambition. Boris has charisma and is himself. Starmer is an empty suit used by McSweeney.

And re the COVID parties. It's mad that he went over that and not the bodies piling up due to mismanagement of a pandemic. Says a lot about this country.

Starmer is a massive disappointment to me, but this is a wild take.

"If you did a tally of lies, Starmer would be streets ahead. Look up his Labour leadership pledges..."

Prove it because I believe that to be utter nonsense.

"Boris has charisma and is himself"

He only has charisma to those who are willing to look past all his misdemeanors.

"And re the COVID parties. It's mad that he went over that and not the bodies piling up due to mismanagement of a pandemic. Says a lot about this country."

Agreed but that's also not what we are discussing, it was a clear example of him lying repeatedly, lest we also not forget the 350m to the NHS each week painted on a bus....

I would also argue that saying "Boris had charisma" also says a lot about how some view things in this country.

What has Starmer been remotely truthful about? I can't think of a single thing. I can't think of another politician who has mislead people and lied so consistently. Things he's been disingenuous about include his feelings towards Jeremy Corbyn, the Brexit referendum and rejoining EU, calls for second referendum, immigration, public ownership, the trans debate, the environment and climate action, the rest of the leadership pledges... It goes on and on.

Boris and Farage at least believe in something however much I dislike it.

That's kind of the point I'm making! If you look more disingenuous next to Boris, as Starmer I think does, then that is really saying something about the state of British liberalism...

In absolute terms? Absolutely not. Compared to serial liar Boris Johnson, who would sell his own mother if it might benefit him? Absolutely.

No. I don't think he has strong principles at all but he's not a narcissist like Johnson or Farage. They'd say or do anything for their own gain, Starmer is weak and blows in the political wind without any clear sense of direction but he's not a narcissist.

I see from looking at his tweets that most the things you've said are copied directly from what he has said.

The grandmother/mother post for instance was posted by him two hours ago.

Do you have any original thoughts of your own on the subject?

If you read the thread closely, you'd see that I wasn't the one to introduce the selling mothers idea.

And Boris didn't? Christ, that is some take

You accuse Starmer of arming Israel, when the UK has been doing this for years under the Tories. In fact arms sales to Israel declined in 2024

And Starmer getting into bed with Blackrock is again just another continuation of tory policies of selling off Britain to the highest bidder.

If you're going to accuse Starmer of things and then stick up for Boris, you're really going to have to explain your reasoning other than just "Boris has charisma"

I'm not sticking up for Boris.

I'm saying that Starmer is as dishonest as him. There's no difference between them.

The difference is that Boris never paraded himself as a paragon of virtue on the issue. He was roguish about it which seems easier to forgive which is why the public voted for him in a landslide presumably. Or did the public in 2019 think he was honest then? Because if they did, they hadn't been paying very much attention.

Boris couldn't open his mouth without a lie falling out of it. Starmer blows with the wind and is weak, but I find it staggering someone would claim he's as big a liar as Johnson. Boris got sacked for lying twice in his career, ffs, before you even get on to the constant gaslighting that was his premiership.

People like Braverman describing it as an invasion were not helpful

She even played on the fact her husband was Jewish so it was okag, you'd hope he would be horrified by the language and the Rwanda scheme which she described as her dream

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
