Just read Stu's observations from the game yesterday and he called out the lack of balance across the front 4:

"Lone striker Hirst had just eight touches during his 71 minutes on the field.

A big reason for that, I felt, was that the three in behind him - Hutchinson, Enciso and Clarke - all played a bit too much for themselves rather than the team.

The trio all had exciting, skilful moments that drew fouls and created openings. They also all had several frustrating moments where they were guilty of tunnel vision and trying to beat one man too many.

Every team needs an X-Factor 'can make something out of nothing' player or two. Having three dribblers in the same side is arguably reckless.

Town have undoubtedly missed the attacking variety of a straight line speedster on the right like Wes Burns and Chiedozie Ogbene, plus a tenacious, last shoulder, penalty box sniffer like Sammie Szmodics."

I tend to agree that we do miss someone wide with pure straight line speed to release in behind the lines. Something different for the defence to worry about rather than constantly trying to run at the defenders with the ball.

Pretty sure I witnessed him 1st hand absolutely thunderbolting it past Pickford a couple of weeks back and didn't he win Goal of the season a couple of years back for doing roughly the same?

Yes but it doesn’t fit with Gringo’s narrative.

I think people are maybe being a bit harsh on Enciso.

He has scored 2 goals, has 3 assists, has created 4 big chances and 18 chances.

His chance per 90 rate is slightly above Omari's. And he is second in the team in terms of assists and third in terms of big chances.

And he hasn't played a full season.

EDIT: Interestingly, Clarke has the highest chance per 90 rate, slightly above that of Leif.

My narrative is that the 14th best player for shooting in our team should pass the ball more. One spectacular goal, which I was there to see and thoroughly enjoyed, doesn't change that.

EDIT - but ultimately he is not our player and it doesn't really matter.

The problem with that straight line speed and let's be honest, when is it a problem, it always gives you option over the top but PL defenders position themselves better and tend to mitigate against it more often

Burns always put in a shift but rarely had the joy he got in the Championship

I note that Sunderland appear to have some speedsters that served them well in the playoffs so far

Latte we did try and sign late in August had that, we also were linked with Wimmer from Wolfsburg in January who looked like Burns with a bit more ability to weave left and right

I wonder if we will look at a pacey striker in the summer to give us a different option, I have no clue who we are about

True however, isn't half of the trick that they have to position themselves to cover against the speed and running in behind?

Even if it comes to nothing it might push the line back a yard or two or it might push just that full back further back than the rest of the line and play someone else onside.

Crucially the key thing with blistering, direct pace is that it only has to come off for you once all game and it can be decisive.

We've massively missed Ogbene/Burns and Szmodics. Enciso has flashes of brilliance, but a bit like Hutch is playing for himself and not the team. Clarke is just out of his depth in the PL. Whilst we've underperformed as a team this year for sure, injuries have really hampered any sort of balance to the side and any rhythm we could have hoped to get. If Hutch gets a move this summer, I can only see it being to a mid-table team. He's not physical enough for a Brentford or a Fulham; he will probably end up at Palace.

I find it interesting how much better a player Ogbene has become since his unfortunate injury. From what I saw, he's a solid enough wide player, but without the pace or guile to beat his man & not someone who would have created many scoring opportunities.

I agree and was what I was taking from Stu's piece. Having different styles of play and threats make it more unsettling for the defence.

I didn't see the first half yesterday, but what I saw in the second half was how Leicester were doubling up on Omari to keep him in check.

They’ll be short reels in a lot of cases.

Or they'll show the same bit of play several times over while pumping up the volume
