Trump 'saving' white South Africans while he washes his hands of actual ethnic cleansing until the Gaza Rivera real estate is cleared.

It’s actually worse than I thought, there is evidence in that video of politicians telling a large group that it’s sometimes ok to kill etc

Are you saying that they are lying about all the farmers who have been killed? This is all new to me by the way, I haven’t been following the story or recent news in general

South Africa is one of the most violent countries on earth, with a very high murder rate. However, despite the claims of the far right, there is no evidence that white farmers are disproportionately victims compared to any other demographic.

Having white South African relatives, I can tell you than many of them continue to be very bitter about having their privilege slightly reduced post Apartheid, at least in my experience.

The politician you are likely to be referring to is Julius Malema, who many would categorise as a political extremist.

You appear very much to have a specific interest in this...

You might want to find some impartial reporting.

Impartial reporting? It’s an opinion piece, the same as the original article. The difference is the Sky News piece, whether impartial or not, has evidence of a political in SA figure telling a large gathering of people that it’s sometimes ok to kill. There was also some chanting with said large crowd gesturing guns in the air.

No mention of any of this in the original article

No specific interest in this, other than already having basic knowledge of the Afrikaans

Out of interest, what parts of their privileges being reduced are they bitter about?

I had relatives who lived in Joburg for a few years pre & post the abolition of apartheid. They weren’t native but & I remember them telling of very serious crime & murder rates & having to watch were they went in the city.

When you say there’s no evidence to suggest the farmers are disproportionately victims compared to any other group, has there been evidence to the contrary? The official figures will be there somewhere & if released would potentially end the debate & make Trump & co look foolish for suggesting otherwise

There are some black Afrikaans too, but it makes for a better title for the journalist not to acknowledge them.

Added to that, if she can’t see the difference between trying to settle millions of Afghans (99.7% Muslim) in a predominantly Christian country & settling a group of Christian, almost entirely English speaking people in the US, I’m not that sure whether I respect her POV.

Afrikaans are not white supremacists, regardless of what the article would lead you to believe.

If you follow cricket, you might be familiar with Hashim Amla who is considered to be Afrikaan, yet is a Muslim of part Indian heritage.

Factually incorrect.
Some Afrikaaners are white supremacists. Many more were. I lived there for 17 years and was involved in the anti-apartheid struggle.

There is even a whites only town in South Africa called Orania.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orania

Hashim Amla never identified himself as an Afrikaaner. A South African, yes, Afrikaaner, no.

The wrong people were in power. The Afrikaans were amongst those to be badly lead, manipulated to vote a certain way. Divisive policies & fear, control systems worldwide have always been manipulative. As an example, you can’t blame every German for what happened in WW2

Also not exactly true.
Hendrik Verwoerd knew exactly what he was doing. Creating a white minority rule state, to benefit the white, predominantly Afrikaaner people, at the expense of the non white majority.
He, and many of his ilk also tacitly supported the nazi’s in WW2.

His National Party won every election from 1948 until democracy in 1994, voted for by white people who wanted to maintain apartheid.

What I was trying to put across was that ALL Afrikaners weren’t racist the way some would have you believe. If you lived there I’m sure you had friends who identified as Afrikaner, who weren’t racist.

On Hashim Amla, apologies, that was a google search gone wrong on my part. On second look it said below “also including results for African cricketers”

You cant simply excuse people voting for apartheid by saying they were badly led. They bought into it.

Correct.
Apartheid also gave the white population economic dominance. Education was very hard to achieve for non whites, particularly ethnic Africans. Neither were they allowed to own property outside of specially created reserves, or own businesses.
It wasn’t that non whites were just disenfranchised.

They were forced off the best arable land and companies and of course the mines were all under white ownership. For which they provided a source of incredibly cheap labour.

Plus the British were complicit in all of these, the Afrikaaner government just made it worse after independence from colonial rule.

They were forced to learn Afrikaans in schools and all exams were in that language into the early 80s, and the indigenous culture was suppressed.

It has been very difficult to redress some of the imbalances in the last 30 years since democracy, which causes some of the frustration.

Again, as far as I know that’s all correct.

In your experience from living there, would you say that the majority of white South Africans are racist?

In the 80s and 90s, yes.
It what they knew. What education and culture had taught them.

Now, no, thankfully. Only some that cling to the past, those that do not want to integrate or those that believe the modern racist narratives peddled by the likes of Trump and Musk.

My South African friends and family are glad these types go to the US, as they are no longer going to be troublemakers for the creation of an integrated society.

And yes, there are some white supremacists in those who have already claimed refugee status.
Some opportunists too, as a green card isn’t easy to come by.

Cyril dealt with it very well.

And here is a long read for the fella who thinks white people are being discriminated against.
I hope he reads it, but will not hold my breath.

The source of this odd fixation is those around Trump, who “doesn’t have a sense of the world outside the United States” Jonathan Jansen, a professor of education in Stellenbosch, tells me, adding: “To know about South Africa, let alone its politics, [the president] must have whisperers,” who are telling him that there is a “white genocide”. Jansen suspects one of those is the South African-born Elon Musk, who has “a grievance against the country”.

Jansen believes South Africa’s hard line against Israel has fuelled animosity in Washington. Taking the Israeli government to the international court of justice “is not cool in the world of Trump”. I suggest a provocative factor may also have been how uncompromising and measured the South African government has been on the issue of white farmers when goaded by Trump. “This is true,” Jansen says. “[Cyril] Ramaphosa, with all his faults – and they are many – is a man of restraint.”

Despite the media focus on the [white supremacy] issue, Jansen calls for some perspective. He says that some white South Africans who claim racial discrimination are a small group of people who nurse an inflated sense of resentment because they still cannot accept that apartheid is over. “There are grievances with a Black government, which is very hard for some of my white brothers and sisters to accept, even after 30 years.”

Jansen says if one is to consider violent crime, “more Black people die than white people, even as a proportion of the population. Make no mistake, these are white supremacists who are drawn to a white supremacist. Their capacity for reflection is not very high.”

Despite the understanding in South Africa that the issue of white discrimination is a political stunt, Jansen notes the galling hypocrisy of it all, considering the effort that Black South Africans made to ensure peace after apartheid. “What riles is that you’re giving attention to people who for 350 years were oppressing us. My argument is: don’t get into a tizzy. But I also regard it quite seriously as a slap in the face for Black South Africans.”

The narrative that Black people now hold power over whites is a fiction that obscures the enduring suffering of apartheid. “Nothing has really changed for Black South Africans apart from the right to vote,” Jansen says. “Many still live in shacks. They still suffer food insecurity. They still have the highest rates of unemployment. We made these enormous concessions during the negotiations to avert a war under Mandela. Whites here would be treated, as they always were, as fellow citizens as opposed to colonisers. And then, on top of all of that, [there was] a truth and reconciliation commission during which people got away with murder – literally.”

On a personal level, Jansen says he will not hide the fact that he feels hurt. But there is comfort in the fact that “among ordinary Black South Africans, they don’t think this is worth spending time on … and the overwhelming majority of white South Africans really just want to make this country work. One sees this moment for what it is. There is another reality out there.”

Thank you for posting. Very interesting. Mrs C has been to S Africa, but only as a tourist. I have not taken any interest in the country really since Mandela died so am ignorant on it.

I worked with a few South Africans over the years and I always got on well with them. Politics and why they weren’t living there? Not something you ask about uninvited and it was not something they ever wanted to talk about beyon ‘man, you have no idea how much better it is to live here’. Why? I can only guess.

I am not ignorant on how Trump operates against people he doesn’t like or people he thinks he can kick around. A President doing that to another head of state in public? It’s bizarre. Goodness what he will be doing in three years time, assuming he is still above ground.

He and his country? Best avoided, sadly.
