Hey, Blueas! You were asking when the gangs would be smashed... 13:44 - May 20 with 2886 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

One smashed already - quite a big one as this was responsible for nearly 4000 people being illegally brought over in small boats.

Rather like arresting a drugs lord. The authorities trumpet about success, but a new lord comes from somewhere to take over the operation so the trade continues. You cannot win the "war on drugs".

He was arrested due to information from the Italians in 2023.
He's been tracked by The NCA in the UK - "The NCA linked that mobile phone to Ebid and then bugged his home to record evidence. The agency found he was involved in a number of smuggling operations, transporting thousands of men, women and children, often in dangerously overcrowded fishing vessels."

He was the head of an international smuggling operation.
He's now been sentenced (today) to 25 years.

YOU do better.

What do you mean "the wrong sea"?!? Firstly, I didn't mention a sea. But regardless, is only one sea bad and the rest ok?! He was the head of an international gang smuggling people to Europe and the UK, which involved small boats. "Ebid even told an associate to kill and throw any migrants caught with their phones into the sea, in a bid to avoid law enforcement, the NCA said."

I say it's brilliant this guy is in prison.

"Judge Adam Hiddleston said that Ebid had a “significant managerial role within an organised crime group” - you said it was one bloke!

He was sentenced today. I never claimed it was down to Labour that he was arrested (it's not really down to any government when someone's arrested) but you can bet if he'd carried on smuggling thousands since Labour came in you'd be blaming them.

There's no "battle", I'm providing helpful information to a good mate. I know he's been worried about people-smuggling gangs so he'll be delighted to know that the head of one was locked up for 25 years today. Well done the NCA and let's hope there's more to come!

Riiiight. So it doesn't count if we swap intel with other countries, we have to do all the work ourselves for you to be satisfied? Given that these gangs are mostly abroad, wouldn't it be a bit daft not to collaborate with agencies in other countries?

At the end of the day, people smugglers getting locked up is all that matters, and targetting those gangs to bring them down is a good idea, surely?

Yes it shows the last govt were on the ball at least. Yet to see a people smuggler jailed under the new govt. Keir's had some meetings about it though I understand.

Should have been, but the backlog grew under our last zombie government. I wonder whether it’s deliberate. With efficient processing of claims we’d have far fewer people to look after while they wait for a decision, it’d be cheaper and we be removing more people. Far less material to fill the gutter press with and harder to weaponise migration then.

It’s was more likely to have been incompetent government and cuts to key departments (I.e. a false economy), but you never know. The Tories game-plan did seem to be to weaponise the issue as much as possible.

I have been saying for a long time, those parties that gain votes from demonising immigration have no intention of "dealing with it". They would lose those votes if it was no longer an issue.

What did the last government about the issue other than delay and demonise?

There’s been some reasonably high profile successful operations so far, e.g:
- https://www.gov.uk/government/news/more-than-30-arrests-in-crackdown-on-common-t

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Labour’s plan. It’s an improvement on what went before (more money, more powers to investigate, tougher laws, freezing assets, and more international collaboration which is absolutely key). It will produce some results, but as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, there’ll always be a new trafficker ready to step in. I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of the gangs nor the people desperate to come here for whatever reason.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
