England v Zimbabwe 14:44 - May 22 with 837 views | Zx1988 | 208/0 off the first 39 overs. What, precisely, is the point of this match? With its truncated format, surely it's little more than a 'Four Day International'.

You know a side is bad when they can't even induce a nick-off to slip from Crawley.

England v Zimbabwe on 14:59 - May 22 with 769 views | gainsboroughblue | Wouldn't surprise me if all tests were 4 days soon. Draws are exceptionally rare now. Duckett just gone 4, 6 out to three long hops.

England v Zimbabwe on 15:06 - May 22 with 735 views | Churchman | Duckett deserves to booted off the team. Getting out to buffet bowling? Disgraceful. Boooo! You are right. Little more than a net session without the nets.
England v Zimbabwe on 16:50 - May 22 with 621 views | tivo | Because we need to help develop smaller nations if we want Cricket to be a successful sport. Especially nations like Zimbabwe who are themselves, working hard to grow it within the country. It's a one off, it's a warm up for us, a great chance for them and will give tens of thousands of people to go and watch a test match at normal prices who could not usually afford it.

That's a very fair point. In which case, it feels a little bit disappointing that this has become very much a second-rate match; four days at one of the 'lesser' international grounds. Why not just invite them to Lord's for five days, in keeping with the traditional format of the first test of the English summer?

As we have seen today, Zimbabwe are hopeless so a half empty Lord's wouldn't be a great idea. Trent Bridge is just over half the size of Lord's and the attendance yesterday was around 9,000. Inviting them for 1 "test" allows England to fulfil their TV obligation of 6 Tests & we are paying Zimbabwe a fee of £150,000. [Post edited 23 May 9:00]

Both our wickets have come from boredom really. I can recall us giving Sri Lanka a one off test in 1984, two years after they achieved test status. England were relishing easy pickings after being pummeled by the West Indies all summer. The Lankans completely outplayed England, albeit taking three of the five days to score 400 odd and the game meandered to a draw. Zimbabwe have had the odd talent. Andy Flower, Heath Streak etc but have never really looked like pushing on in 30 odd years. Internal and political struggles have no doubt been little help mind. [Post edited 22 May 17:59]

Henry Olonga springs to mind, he had to go into exile due to protesting against the Mugabe regime.
England v Zimbabwe on 19:09 - May 22 with 409 views | vinceg | Reminds me of the famous incident between Glenn McGrath and Eddo Brandes the fat Zim chicken farmer. Brandes had been edging McGrath for boundaries through the slips and grinning back at him. One more edge for 4 and fInally McGrath snapped and lost it, yelling at him, "why are you so fat?" Brandes replies "because every time I **c* your wife, she gives me a biscuit!"

‘Lesser international grounds’ - have you ever been to Trent Bridge? I’ve had far more fun watching international cricket there than I ever have at Lords - and it’s affordable. And as to the point to why are we playing them? As one of the retired internationals said today - Broad I think - how are they ever going to get better if they don’t play games against the top tier sides. They’ll never know what’s needed. Having said all that the bowling was woeful but at least it gives England players time in the middle.
