Mary Earps seems to have caused a bit of a hoo-ha 19:40 - May 27 with 2761 viewsSwansea_Blue

by retiring immediately 5 days before the next Lionesses match and ahead of the defence of their Euros title. It leaves only 1 capped keeper in the squad (the relatively young and inexperienced Hannah Hampton - but she is good and has taken over the number 1). Wiegman’s not happy lol.

It would appear earps is too. Don't blame her not wanting to go if she isn't 1st choice. The manager should have said this is your last tourney as #1.

Seems a bit of a 'look at me' statement, and the timing fits.

No great loss.

I'm not sure the timing could have been any different in the circumstances.

It seems she doesn't want to spend her summer sitting on a bench at the Euros, in which case now is probably the time to have been having that conversation with Wiegmann.

Announcing her retirement was probably the only option, as an omission from the squad would have raised eyebrows.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

She's been back up for a while. Could have given more notice of her intent.

Shes the better keeper from what Ive seen. I can understand it. But its definitely bad timing and a bit of "well if im not playing, im not going".

I see it slightly differently. IMO it’s an honour to play for your country, even if that means you’re a squad player. If it was me, I’d answer the call and do whatever was wanted of me. Which is the sort of attitude Mass and Taylor have shown for us this season. Kayden last year. Burgess too for a while had to bide his time. Hladky was also in that boat before Walton’s injury.

It comes across as a bit petulant and selfish to me, BUT she’s got the right to make her own decision of course and it doesn’t lessen her contribution to the Lionesses.

I think she is over rated.

The World Cup was probably her peak.

Agreed about the timing. It sounds like it drops them in the crap a bit as a squad. But it does give someone else a chance to step up as the number 2. It’s a criticism of Wiegman that that should have happened by now, but she’s not been giving the young hopefuls a chance. Maybe it’s for the best in the long term.

I couldn’t care either way; I just thought it was ‘convenient’ timing when they were talking about it on R5 (which they’ve been doing all day!)

Perhaps it depends a bit on the conversation she's had with Wiegmann as well?

I can see her sticking about for a bit following Hampton's taking over the No 1 shirt; see out the season, finish strongly, and see if she has a chance of dislodging her.

If she's had a chat with Wiegmann, and the tenor of that conversation was that she'd missed that bus, I completely understand her decision not to waste a summer sitting around with little to no chance of playing. She's been there, done that, got the match-worn jersey; may as well have some time off this summer, recuperate, have a nice holiday, and come back fresh for the start of the club season in August.

she knew she was quite likely not going to be number 1 for a while. Hampton has played for England more regularly recently than Earps.

Mary lost her place as number 1. Didn't like it and has retired.

I always thought she had her head up her ar&e when she spoke. Ironically she would use lots of buzz words to make herself sound professional, retiring in the method she has proves she isn't professional. If I'm not first choice, feck the team.
Incredibly unprofessional- but I'm not surprised

Firstly some of the responses on here are odious and sexist.

Earps has been in discussions with Wiegman for 12 to 18 months regarding the decision she's not throwing any toys out of her pram, I mean FFS why even say that! She's had injury issues and has also said that it's time for younger players to take her place, probably to preserve her quite likely decent PSG contract. She also used her own cash to fly out and say goodbye to her colleagues and explain her decision. Though some balance might help.

Well that’s not quite true is it.

She was in the squad for the games this week and on the first day of training camp was told by the manager she’d be the second choice keeper for these games and the euros. To which she decided she therefore wanted no part of it and went into the dressing room and told them she’d retired. The players and the manager were both said to be shocked at the decision.

I'm just taking her quote from the interview that was published in the guardian, so you might be wrong and so might I but there you go.

I think the mention of 'sexist' based on previous responses is pretty embarrassing here. People have an opinion that she's thrown her toys out the pram because she's not no.1. It has nothing to do with her gender.
Some people would have the same opinion if, in a year's time Pickford is dropped as No.1 and decides to retire just before a tournament. See also Ben White who a lot of people are angry about walking out of the England squad halfway through a tournament.

Personally, I agree with the idea its an honour to represent your country, whether that's with you being on standby and an important part of driving standards in the group, or whether your first choice.

To defend the "sexist" statement, there was a post which was an attempt at humour which which was subsequently deleted that was quite sexist (I believe it was a genuine attempt at a joke post which backfired). As with a lot of posts on here, when something is edited and/or deleted it can make subsequent posts look poor.

That is what is being referenced - as you say the rest of the comments apply equally whether it is Earps or Pickford etc

plenty of male professional footballers don't want to hang around as near unused squad players, making up the numbers & I think that's understandable, especially from a player who had been #1 for some years. However, having won SPOTY & been given an MBE, Earps probably has an inflated view of her own status.
It's weeks until the Euro finals so not a big deal, but I wonder how Earps might feel if Hampton gets injured. Don't sit by your phone Mary!
