Help with cars 09:49 - May 28 with 2540 viewswiganblue

Hi All

So unfortunately my car has broken beyond repair so I find myself looking for a new car. I drove a manual SUV, diesel. I'm not a petrol head, so tend to look at cars with decent MPG with sensors, cruise control and has to have DAB.

Do I buy what I know being this or should I be considering petrol hybrid?

It seems car manufacturers are moving away from diesel and indeed manual cars, so is it best to future proof myself if I decide to sell later down the line?

I've narrowed it down to Honda or Kia and I'm considering a H-RV, Civic or Niro, or is there something else I should consider? I prefer a raised ride as I do a lot of countryside driving but something about the civic "look" on the shape from 2019 onwards has caught my eye!

No love for the CHR?

Simply no knowledge of them.

I think they look great and it's Toyota, so likely to be a good vehicle

My history teacher told me it was offensive in 1988, so its not a new thing!

Hi mate,

I have been in the vehicle industry my whole life. I have gone from owning a hire fleet and being a small trader. I have bought and sold many vehicles.
I always recommend ford and VW (or VAG family).
If you’re buying a Ford don’t buy anything that’s a wet belt.

My favourite engines for reliability, MPG and performance are the following:-

Ford diesels 1.5 TDI or the 1.6TDI both low car tax and reliable
Petrol the 1.25 don’t buy anything that’s a eco tech wet belts (1.0 petrols)

VW 1.6TDI cheap tax, great MPG and solid
VW petrol 1.2 or 1.4 TFSI’s

If you find a car you seem happy with Ii am more than happy to do my remote checks;- MOT history, service history, valuations and HPI for free of charge… why? I do this all day when I’m looking at cars to flip, another one won’t hurt. Good luck mate 👍🏁

Well if you are offended and hurt you have my apologies. Since they’ve had plenty of my money for their fine products (tv, cars, hifi etc) so I’m sure they’ll cope with it.

So because you've bought Japanese products, it's OK to use derogatory terms for them? Strange reasoning.

I do not see it as a derogatory term. Never did. It’s easier than calling them say ‘persons originating from the island of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku’.

There are plenty of terms for them you could use that are derogatory, just as there are for every nationality. The context of how a word is used is as important as the word itself, in my view.. The attached has an interesting summary.

Two bits of advice:

Message Newky - he's knows his sh1t and will give you an informed opinion.

If buying second hand do your homework on possible issues with said car and if possible take someone who knows their sh1t along with you to check it out. Even more important if your choice of car has known issues and/or is more than low mileage.

Did he advise you to get an Alfa.
Still no speeding ticket BTW!!

The term "Paki shop" wasn't originally intended to be derogatory, although it was probably incorrect as many Asians who ran corner shops were actually Indian, in the same way that many "Indian" restaurants in Britain are run by Bangladeshis. However, the term "Paki" no seems associated with being derogatory about Asian immigrants so saying "Paki shop" now is usually considered unacceptable.

I'm not much of a petrol head either and I don't own a Japanese car, but I was talking to someone who owns a garage and has been a mechanic for 30 years and he was telling me the cars that seem to have the least issues are Japanese, reckons they're the value bet if reliability is top of the list. Appreciate Kia is actually Korean (I think) but I think the same applies to them. Any manufacturer that provides a 7 year or 100,000 mile guarantee must be confident on build quality.

"In 2011, after the term's offhand use in a March 26 article appearing in The Spectator ("white-coated Jap bloke"), the Minister of the Japanese Embassy in London protested that "most Japanese people find the word 'Japs' offensive, irrespective of the circumstances in which it is used".[16]"

So it is offensive. You could just use the word Japanese?

Same with the word "Chinky" that many people used to refer to the local Chinese takeaway. Probably not meant in an offensive way by most, but certainly a derogatory term.

It's has historically racist connotations. It's was certainly more inflammatory post WW2 (think Petal Harbour) and it was used freely as a negative nickname, probably more prominent in the US than over here. Whilst it may not be as strong a term as say 50 years ago, it's just easier not to use it imo.

My dad used to love England bearing the "Krauts" as he called the Germans, but as he was a Londoner who fought against them in WWII, I think I'll give him a pass on that one.

See the link I posted regarding how that term is used.

I’ll repeat, it’s not necessarily the word but how it is used. No more, no less. If you take the word sassenach it can be used as an insult or as a joke or just a term. It’s how it’s said (it’s derived from ‘Saxon’’). It’s been used towards me over the years in various ways but I couldn’t care a less. If it’s used in a hostile way, I’ll deal with the hostility not the word.

The term ‘paki’ has in my world always been used as an insult so it’s not a wordI have ever or would ever use.

I am guessing that with most shortened or nickname words, Japs, Aussies, Brits, Chinks, Yanks etc it is more to do with lazy lingo rather than derogatory intentions originally.

During the war, the Americans got pretty paranoid about their ethnic Japanese and either interned or subjected them to colour-bars "No Japs" signs etc.

A friend of mine’s son has one and absolutely loves it and has had no problems at all. I get the impression Mercedes have upped their game in recent years.

Did you know the Mercedes name originates from a Daimler sales dude who named a racing car after his daughter?

In WW1, they made mainly excellent aero engines for aircraft like the Fokker DVII, Albatros, Halberdtadt, Pfalz fighters and various observation aircraft including Roland’s, Aviatiks, AEG. Maybach engines powered Zeppelins. Engines and trucks in WW2 using up a generous number of slaves as most manufacturers around today did back then.

But it’s really cars they are known for. Racing and otherwise. They are of course the oldest car manufacturer in the world. Never owned a Mercedes. Like to though.
