Some people are absolute scum, part 498749 on 07:13 - Jun 17 with 1368 views | Swansea_Blue | As soon as I read the first two paragraphs I suspected it would involve at least some gamblers. I hadn’t considered that angle before, but that seems like a dangerous side effect when tiny moments in sport take on a larger importance (for the gamblers) than they deserve. Especially when it results in abuse like this. Not that all abuse is linked to gambling of course.

Prior to social media, these people would have had to write a letter. The one thing about having to write a letter? It gives you time to think.

Take your points, but it still amazes me that some people don't seemingly have enough time to think before posting this vile stuff. I wouldn't even think it, but if I did I like to think I'd pause before putting it out into the world! You see OTT reactions on matchdays on here (obviously not equating that to the vile stuff in the story) where people have stated it was heat-of-the-moment, but it seems to me a lot of people's 'heat-of-the-moment' seems to last a lot longer than heat-of-the-moment these days! When Ipswich concede a goal, especially due to an error by one of our players, I might well shout "FFS Player's Name you C***" at the TV or in the ground... but I don't feel the need, or have the time, to get up TWTD on my phone and type it in to share with everyone. That moment of anger has diminished by the time that would take. But yeah social media has a lot to answer for because it clearly makes it a lot easier than it ever was. It's horrible to think that these people (talking about the people in the story again now) were always there just thinking this stuff, until one day they had a platform to share it.

I would imagine some of them benefit financially from having the public profile, especially if they’re not a household name. It helps them become better known, a better candidate for sponsors. It also helps provide updates to family/friends who can’t be on tour. Maybe? Just thinking aloud as to why they might use it. I’m with you though; I wouldn’t touch social media if I was known. Why would you use the C word at someone who has made an error ? It makes it sound like they did it on purpose. Duffus, fool, tool or dingbat would be more accurate to describe a player you thought was not up to the job. Or plank, twonk, knobber, dickhead, bellend...I will probably come back to this post and edit to add some more.

And on we go. | |

Actually I've very rarely used the C-word, if ever. It was an example. I think dingbat is a good alternative. Or crumpethead. I often call Lady Dollers crumpethead.

It’s ok to call a player a cnt for a mistake that leads to a goal? What if you are in close proximity to said players family/friends?

Well said - but if it is a particularly foolish and unforced error is it OK to utter 'cockwomble' in the heat of the moment ?

These days I just tend to sigh. Same as refs being hopeless. Pointless shouting and screaming.

Some people are incredibly entitled and go form 0-100 in a second. Working in retail made me realise some people are absolutely unhinged. For someone high profile like her who can receive messages from people hiding behind a username who know there is almost certainly not going to be any consequences for saying that kind of thing it must be awful.

Some people are absolute scum, part 498749 on 15:57 - Jun 17 with 741 views | LegendofthePhoenix | There are and always will be stupid and ignorant scumbags, that will never change. But the people to ask questions of are the misguided/corrupt politicians who deregulated gambling, along with the weak regulation of social media. Gambling has become an enormous societal problem - surprise, surprise. It preys on the stupid, and sucks in youngsters with the crazy levels of advertising that push it down your throat, whether at sports events, on TV, internet, it's pervaisve and everywhere. It contributes nothing positive, just ruins lives. This abuse of sports women and men is just one more indication of how out of control it is. If I could, I'd ban all gambling advertising and instataneous betting. Maybe do away with online betting. If you want to place a bet, go in to a bookies and prove your age. Society would benefit hugely. And even the individuals who gamble would see their lives improve, although many would be too thick to realise it. Societies need regulation, because many people just can't make the right choices.

Some people are absolute scum, part 498749 on 16:08 - Jun 17 with 715 views | MattinLondon | I know that a lot of people will respond to this by arguing that social media is toxic and so don’t use it. But I consider that to be a form of victim blaming - social media can be a magnificent thing, connecting people from every walk of life to others elsewhere in the world. But it’s spoilt by morons. Unfortunately it’s so predictable- when England lost on penalties to Italy with Rashford and Saka missing from the spot, most of us knew what was coming. And then you had the apologisers of abusers claiming that it’s just words on the Internet - which is just bollox. The only way to make a lot of these people accountable is for Twitter etc etc to be legally obliged to verify their users profiles - if such users wish to be publicly anonymous then that’s fair enough, but those social media companies will know who they are. And in terms of continued misogynistic or homophobic or racist abuse then those companies will be legally obliged to inform the police who they are (if complaints are made). Obviously there are privacy concerns that’ll have to be made but hopefully such concerns can be met.

Easy solution for this make it mandatory you can only post online if you have to prove who you are and use your real name. Most of this nonsense would end straight away

I've already explained it was an example, not literal, and I didn't even reveal the actual word. And I know no players family/friends sit near enough to me (not that I've ever used that word anyway). And of course you've never said rude words at the football.

Haha, I’m not surprised. I’ve always done whatever I can to avoid having to work with the public directly. We used to get abuse when I worked in Dixons on a holiday job in the 80s. I can’t imagine things have improved since.
