Tears for fears. The hurting.
Still dust it down and give it a spin on spotify every now and again.
It's amazing how a couple of years makes such a difference in childhood. Songs From the Big Chair was probably the 3rd/4th album I ever owned as a 9/10 year old and I loved it, but it was another 6-7 years before I even knew about The Hurting let alone heard any of the songs on it.
I would have been 6/7 years old when TFF first broke onto the scene and I had no awareness of them at all. I look at Top 40 charts from the early 80s and probably recognise 3-4 songs, but give me a Top 40 from 1985-1991 and I could probably sing along to 25-30 of the songs.
For what it's worth, The Hurting is a better album, although Shout and Head Over Heels are my two favourite TFF songs.
As for my first album, probably War of the Worlds like a couple of others on here or Human Racing by Nik Kershaw.

I didn't always have obscure music tastes. This isn't an album that dates well, though I'm not sure many thought it was especially good at the time tbh.
Second album bought was Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi, which still sounds great, albeit of it's time.

You bought the wrong Quo album. ‘On the Level’ or ‘Blue for You’ would have been far better choices - or Piledriver come to that. Anything with the original Frantic Four.
And if you’d had the money for a double album Status Quo Live 1976. Possibly the best live album ever released. Its completely raw, mistakes and all.

Me too! I was so excited. First band I saw back in 72.
I saw Slade in 1972 as well, Bardney Festival. I think they had to follow The Faces on stage, and they were just as good, which surprised and pleased me.

Lucky you! Both terrific bands. I’d love to have seen both. I had tickets to see Slade at the Woolwich Tramshed in the 80s but it was cancelled because they sold so few tickets - so the chance was lost.

in a double purchase with my birthday coppers. James Blunt's Back to Bedlam was acquired later around Christmas time, to round off an impressive year for music (as well as Smoresy's already refined musical tastes).

Had comprehensive sleeve notes about each song by the band, which might have been fine on LP, but on cassette the print was unbelievably tiny. I still pored over every word.
I'll pick one of the less well known tracks, as it was a Greatest Hits album with so many big hitters on it:
