As I've mentioned before, I'm a surveyor, so I spend most of my days in other people's homes.

I'm constantly surprised by the number of baseball bats, iron bars, and other implements I see propped up beside people's beds. It's never occurred to me that I might want something heavy and swingable close to hand should something go bump in the night.

Is this a thing? Or do I just come across a greater than average number of wrong-uns?

Sounds like extreme paranoia to me

That's what I'm inclined to think.

Either people who have a reason to fear that they might wake up to find someone at the foot of their bed, or folks who have bought into the current fearmongering narrative re crime etc.,

Why do some of you think you're rambo? Everything I own is replaceable (and insured, for the most part). If someone breaks in they can have whatever they want, why would I risk trying to fight them?

Indeed.

In Nigeria I was offered a panic button (with armed response) which I declined. Also used an armed escort just 3 times in 8 years.

Why? Because the idea of being around armed robbers with a group of armed guards didn't appeal. If they want my wallet etc. they can have it.

A wise colleague once.said "One thing worse than meeting an armed robber, meeting an angry one"

Same applies here tbh. and you start waving a bat in their face, things could escalate and not in a good way.

Probably most often in the 20-50 crowd. Typically a fairly similar demographic as well, but it's tough to put it into words without wanting to be unkind/disparaging.

Often a very slight edge where I wouldn't be entirely surprised if they have cause to keep a weapon by the bed, even if that's not actually the case.

I’ve seen an opened packet of tampax spread across the bedroom floor, sex toys, bras/knickers drying etc. people don’t care that a surveyor is coming around they just make sure nothing is in view when the estate agent photographs the property
