As I've mentioned before, I'm a surveyor, so I spend most of my days in other people's homes.
I'm constantly surprised by the number of baseball bats, iron bars, and other implements I see propped up beside people's beds. It's never occurred to me that I might want something heavy and swingable close to hand should something go bump in the night.
Is this a thing? Or do I just come across a greater than average number of wrong-uns? |  |

Well.... i always assumed houses were pretty secure until I saw how easily they broke in to my house. Ultimately if someone wants to get in to your house they can do, if you're unlucky enough to be there at the same time, some form of protection is better than having nothing to defend yourself with. | | | |

I had a 3-4 minute fight with a burglar in my house about 15 years ago. When I eventually got him out the door he was screaming that he was going straight to the police.
He either had a wise change of mind on his way to the station or they laughed him outta the place. I like to think it was the 2nd one. |  | | |

I imagine the bat will strike the ceiling, showering me with plaster and dust. The burglar will hit me in the stomach, and then when I fall kick me in the ribs. Then he’ll take what he wants.

Cops will say you used excessive force in hitting them with a bat - Unless they were coming at you with a knife or something. Force used has to be proportional to the level of threat. You can't just clobber a burglar if you come across them rifling through your stuff. | |

Duncan Ferguson put a burglar in hospital for 3 days and wasn't charged with anything.
Ancedotal maybe but I'm sure there are plenty of other examples.

I keep a razor sharp axe and a hammer by the bed. Weapons of very last resort. Baseball bat? You are better off with a cricket bat if you really want to give a burglar a headache; break a bone or two.
A buddy of mine keeps a couple of crossbows ready and one or two more devastating weapons, but then he is a little crazy as well as being a martial arts dude.
For the sane, if someone comes in with a knife you are in a whole world of trouble. Give them what they want and run like hell if you get the chance. |  | | |

I keep a copy of the book "How to be a great Minnie Caldwell", written by Margot Bryant, by my bed. It' s a very large heavy book and acts as a great deterent against burglars and other not very nice folk. | |
