Need to vent. Had a job offer rescinded after weeks of delay. 23:48 - Aug 7 with 2113 views | GunnsAirkick | I got made redundant at the end of June, I've had quite a lot of interest thankfully and I got a job offer mid-July after several interviews (so I haven't really been looking since then). Today I got a call saying the position had been axed due to budget cuts (it's a local authority role). I went through a two stage interview, full HR process and then the plug is pulled. I'm furious as I haven't been active for the last couple of weeks bar one role I kept on the back burner just in case. Has this happened to anyone on here before? I'm glad I at least kept the other role as a backup. It could potentially be for more money too so hopefully it's a blessing in disguise (doesn't feel like it at the moment though).

Need to vent. Had a job offer rescinded after weeks of delay. on 08:51 - Aug 8 by thebooks | I’d be worried working at a company laying people off because they think Co-pilot is a capable replacement for anything. I guarantee that will come back to bite them. We have ridiculously low corporation tax in the UK already. Always the threat of everyone upping and leaving unless corporations are taxed less. The one thing the UK is investing in is AI. It creates very few jobs so hard to see how it will magically create growth. US job figures are very poor. Considering over the last 6 months US companies have invested more in AI than the govt. has spent on education, health and welfare, that is worrying. It’s a bubble. |
When you start looking at the amount of money every company is losing on AI outside of Nvidia, you do start to wonder when the house of cards is going to collapse.

Indeed. You can only announce so many breakthroughs (ChatGPT 5 is the latest) before we start asking whether it’s actually worth investing trillions of dollars in what is basically a text generator. https://kieranhealy.org/blog/archives/2025/08/07/blueberry-hill/ [Post edited 8 Aug 8:58]

Need to vent. Had a job offer rescinded after weeks of delay. on 09:04 - Aug 8 with 187 views | SuffolkITFC | You really have my sympathy. I had a similar experience in the NHS. Was offered a role as head of a department after being asked to apply for the position (I was coming to the end of a career break at the time), but ultimately the position was handed to someone already within the team and I was cast aside after 6 months of delays. I still have the offer letter on my desk now (must burn it!) What hurt was that I found up via a friend who was working in the department when they messaged asking why I wasn't taking up the role!! The person handed the role had been doing it for a week before anyone contacted me. To this day I have not had an explanation as to why I was bumped, but frankly I don't care anymore! As it turned out I ended up in a totally different role outside of the NHS which was a far better fit for me so it all worked out. Like you said I would consider it a blessing in disguise as if that's the way they treat potential new staff members how are they treating current staff who are already invested in the company? You will look back in the future and breathe a sigh of relief.....it's just hard to see right now as you are in the midst of things. I think it's astonishing that companies preach 'being kind', but this doesn't seem to extend any further than a powerpoint presentation and empty words. Try to keep a positive frame of mind, and remember that the role/company wasn't the right one for you. It's their loss at the end of the day! My motto is that everything works out in the end, and if it doesn't feel like it will, then it's probably not the end!

Your second to last paragraph is spot on. It was never the right role and it’s their loss. It’s also important to remember it’s not personal. Never was, never will be despite how it feels when you’ve been messed around and/or told to take a hike. It’s a big old world and there is always opportunities and things always work out. Anyone who has changed jobs and careers, been rejected, made redundant gone to interview and received the thanks but no thanks letter will understand that. The trick is regardless of how many kicks in the teeth you get, you don’t give up, you don’t stop until you find something that suits you/fits - and the OP will. [Post edited 8 Aug 9:30]

Well the flip side is that she’s better than them and dodged a bullet. Who the hell wants to work for people that pull stunts like that?

Well she already works for the same company, was a step up the ladder so to speak. it's working out ok though but at the time wasn't great. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Fair enough. But if I was her, I wouldn’t forget what happened. I’d lock it away and use it in the future. Either by remembering it if a good opportunity presents itself elsewhere or internally.

Funnily enough that has already happened.

It’s better to have several irons in the fire no matter how convinced you are about your preferred offer. Hope you backup role works out. [Post edited 8 Aug 12:38]
