Good teams play badly but still pick up points- 23:12 - Aug 8 with 1867 views | Libero | I’m sure people are having very balanced reactions to the game. Birmingham restricted us really well and we laboured away with very little quality, making hard work of simple things too. Cajuste needs to get up to speed quick, that midfield needs support, ASAP. Good teams play badly but still pick up points- on 09:10 - Aug 9 by Herbivore | It's very odd, the consensus before kick off was that this would be one of our hardest games of the season and possibly the worst fixture we could have had first up and that we'd take a point all day long. We took a point and I'm seeing lots of people losing their heads. Is it going to be like this all season again? I'd hoped we'd left that behind. We weren't great, but we had 2 or 3 decent chances first half to go in ahead after nullifying them effectively without playing much football ourselves in the opening 20 minutes. Those saying we created nothing from open play must have missed Szmodics missing a sitter, Taylor nodding a very good chance wide, and Leif getting it wrong when in on the left (another touch then picking out a teammate would have been a better call). Brum ran their socks off and looked goosed at the end. They were dirty bastards too and the ref never really has control, made the game very disjointed. We'll be a lot better in a few weeks. Too many last night were short of football (Johnson, Ogbene, Taylor, Szmodics, Clarke, Hirst - all bit part players and/or injured last season) and a bit of confidence. The squad has more strength in depth to come as well. We take the point, we move on, and ideally we do it without pissing our pants because we didn't play like 1970s Brazil. |
Perfectly summed up. | |
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

We weren’t great?! A huge understatement. For a lot of that squad that had played together during last season compared to a Brum side that had made additions during the summer we played like strangers and they were the better side. It was a poor performance full stop and Birmingham wanted it more than our players. If you can tell me when Allsop had to make a save that would be great, Szmodics’ effort was poor he should’ve at least hit the target. You don’t have to play like vintage Brazil, at least attempt to do something would be helpful. We did virtually nothing last night in that final third and were outplayed. We got very fortunate to get a draw, which quite frankly we didn’t deserve. That’s a more honest summary, than your ‘blue tinted’ outlook. [Post edited 9 Aug 16:32]

It was a terrible performance -30% possession first half, we had no control whatsoever.

Isn’t it funny how some of our fans don’t like to call a spade a spade?!

Watching the wallies wrong their hands about how poor we were does have me a bit concerned about what does happen if we go through a tough patch this season though - it’ll be “McKenna out!” at the earliest opportunity from some of these I reckon.

I think people are happy with the result but concerned with elements of the performance.

Are we not allowed to say when we play poorly or do we just pretend we played well every game?! When comments are valid and balanced that’s fair game, there’s no disguising last night was woeful however you try to gloss over it.

It was a concerning performance, I'll agree. It was also just one game, with an unfinished squad and injuries. I think we should see how were doing by mid September before we soil ourselves, like some seem to be doing (not saying you are btw JJJJ).

Yeah, I was just disappointed with not being able to match their intensity at times and a couple of individual performances. They had 3-4 sights at goal and took one of them. Pretty sure all came from us conceding possession either from their press or just giving it away poorly. The brief times we did get it down and play we looked the better footballing side. Also pre season can not replicate for that environment at all. I think all the hype of us being favorites and a fairly underwhelming window hasn’t helped. The very good news is, we didn’t lose, we have business to do and a lot of those that started will still be getting back in game shape. [Post edited 9 Aug 16:58]

I remember the derby game down here early in 2018/19. Neither side were great shakes, but we were the better team. They managed to wangle a draw, with... was it Farke back then?... under a lot of pressure. They cruised to the title, we slumped to an embarrassing relegation, which goes to show, things can take time to settle. That should not distract from the disappointment of yesterday's performance, though. I did expect more considering how we fared in pre-season, albeit I understand those kinds of games are very different.

Some of those that are using the 0 shots on target as a stick to beart us with are being rather disingenuous. We were poor and very disjointed, but even so, we did fashion a few chances that we should've done better with. Sammy had a real chance to take the lead that he blasted wide and Taylor had a header that he should've tested the keeper with too. It wasn't like we offered nothing at all.
